Hello from Canada!

Hey there!

Signed up last year when I bought my 2015 650 Versys LT. Found this forum quite useful. Wanted to post today but found I couldn't which led me to the post as to why... so.. here I am!

Hello from Canada!

I want to comment on (URL redacted per post rules as I'm a nub) because this guy isn't running the right fuel (I confirmed in my service manual), but I can't reply until you guys let me in!

I ride a 2009 250 Ninja (my girlfriend's bike - my learner bike) and my 2015 650 Versys ABS LT.

Looking forward to helping buddy out! (He needs to run 91 mix; NOT the 87 octane he's been running. I'll post the 2015 service manual that shows the details once my account is permitteD).

Thanks!

Welcome...........yeah, the OM says minimum 87 but some folks think higher is better (waste of money actually). I actually run 85 sometimes. There are places here that have 85, 87, 89 and 91/92. I usually use the 87 and get good performance and 55 + mpg.

The service manual I have a PDF copy of says to run 91 and the dealership I bought my 2015 from specifically made me sign off on never putting anything lower than 91 in it...

The 250 Ninja takes 87... Perhaps pre 2015 Versys' do as well?

One of the reasons I bought the Versys (a 2015) was that it used 87 octane. I don't have a service manual, just the Owners Manual. I'll have to do some more research perhaps.

You can download the service as well as the owners manual from this site.

Page 19 of the Service Manual PDF linked below shows the Minimum Octane Rating (91), which is why I'm surprised how many people on this site are running 87 in their 2015's...

I can't yet post the link because I don't have enough posts. Maybe this one gets me over the hump?

In my OWNERS MANUAL (for my '15 650LT) on page 60, under "Fuel Requirements" it says: *Antiknock Index of 87 or more
then again on page 61 "Use minimum of 87 octane..."
and on page 63 [Antiknock Index of 87 or more].

As this is the bilingual Canadian OWNERS MANUAL, your page number MAY be different.

This is my THIRD Versys 650 - I've ridden OVER 130,000 miles among them, using ONLY 87 octane gas!

Notification Woes?

Maybe this isn't the right spot, but I'm receiving notifications in the navigation bar, as if to tell me of replies to this post, but when I click on notifications, nothing's shown?

I can't seem to figure out what the notifications are actually for, or how to clear them.

Help?

Yep, my Owners Manual says 87 octane minimum...............that's what I'm going to stick with.......and thanks for the info on the Service Manual. I prefer paper but this will work until I get a "real" manual.

The dealers really seem to push the 91 octane gasoline. It was strongly recommended when I picked up my 650 last summer and again last week when we picked up the 300x. But they claimed it was not so much an octane thing as to use particular brands of 91 as they had low ethanol content (currently this seems to be Shell supplied gasoline in Ontario).

My understanding is, an Engine tuned to run at 91 will run best at 91. An engine tuned to run at 87 will run best at 87.

I don't know what owners manual you guys are reading but I'm going to trust my dealer / this service manual that very-much states 91 is the (and I quote), "Minimum Octane Rating".

Interestingly enough, 87 is listed next right beside "Antiknock index (RON + MON/2)". Anyone know what that's for?

"Research Octane Number + Motor Octane Number/2" GOOGLE it if you need MORE info.

Basically that is saying USE 87 Octane gasoline.
