GeekPriest Introduction and Questions

Hi. I'm a rider in my late 40's, and I live in Texas. Married, kids, job, and church. I like talking about most everything but sports and gossip.

I currently enjoy my old Yamaha cruiser, but I am considering a Versys.

I test-rode one locally -- a 2008 with 12k miles -- and liked it a bit. Pretty darned agile. Plenty of power for anything I care to do (which does not include being a member of the Grease Spot Club). I did manage to lift the front wheel off the ground, quite unexpectedly, on the test ride. Lots more power delivery from a stop than I'm used to.

What are the downsides of an '08? What's a good price for one in good condition and no accessories? I do wish there were a bit more storage on this bike.

One thing that was awkward at a couple of points on the ride was the small shift lever on the left and the small brake pedal on the right.

I'm not a particularly huge guy. Nonetheless, I had to fidget my left boot under the shifter, and the right boot struggled to stay on the brake. My older cruiser's brake pedal is as good 1.5" square.

Recommendations for aftermarket replacements here?

I feel like I got a great price on my 2013 with 14k miles @ $3000

These might help with the shifter side...

Would anyone pay $3k for a 2008 with 12k miles?

They're both adjustable - try that FIRST.

I would probably ASK MORE than $3k for mine, IF I wanted to sell it (I don't!).

Yes, Im sure people would... if it is stock id try to get him closer to 2500 but I am never happy with bike prices....

PS the fly and ride is a time honored tradition. There are KLE650's for sale on here and other sites.

I may suggest a lower price to the seller, or at least encourage him (a dealer) to toss in a nice tank bag or armored pants.

I can deal with fly and ride, except that I'm doing rather too much flying right now in the first place. This particular deal is actually local, so convenience is something, too.

I'll second the brake lever complaint. My size 9.5US motorcycle boot won't stay planted on the brake lever for love, money, or promises of a 20 year old female Chinese gymnast with low self esteem..

You are of course aware that the shift lever can be adjusted via linkage (up or down as needed.) I had to tweak mine up before I was happy.

08/09 are the best years for a Versys. My has 61k km and still runs fine anytime, anywhere.

Price for 08 - cant help you as I am from the other side of the universe.

Nice image.

I wear a size 9.5 boot also. It's not like I have ginormous feet.
