Hello Everyone

First off, Im an old guy.....well in relative terms at least. In my head I am still in my 20's. I have been riding for ...well more years than what I care to think about. I have had a variety of bikes. Kaw's, Honda's, several Harleys and my last was a Triumph Explorer.
I loved the Triumph but.....weight and power. I was not using even a 1/3 of the power that bike had. The weight is....well it was a pig.

I got rear ended last fall and after I fixed the bike I sat down and chose to sell it. Take a year off and just see if I still wanted another bike. I think I do, but I will wait out my year.
What I have figured out is I want to down size. I have no need to have a bike that has 100 hp and will go zero to stupid in 4.8 seconds.

I have kind of worked out that my next bike will be in the 500 - 650 range. I want to load it like a pack mule, then pick a road and see where it goes. Even if it turns into gravel or dirt.
To get from point at to point b I want to flog this bike like a rented mule. I live down by Houston Tx so I have a ways to go to get places.

I am just looking, reading and getting some info.

Thanks.

I B Da Monk

Rode from Ft.Worth Tx to Los Angeles Ca in the middle of the summer in 2011 bike loaded down plus me at about 275lbs before gear. Did 850 miles the first day and the last 550 miles the next. Mostly speeds between 80-95mph and the bike took it like a champ.

Welcome aboard. I suspect you're a "45" just as I am which puts us both in our seventh decade, though thankfully not yet grown up. Told my son-in-law once that I had decided that, when I finally grew up, I wanted to be the captain of a Klingon battle cruiser. He liked it.

Regarding a bike that could fit your parameters, you might want to take a look at the Royal Enfield Himalayan - seriously. It isn't a rocket ship with tons of unusable power (411 cc single cylinder fuel injected engine), doesn't weigh very much (191 kg) and is, despite what some might say, well built and reliable. It sports a 21 inch front wheel and 17 inch rear affording over 8.5 inches of ground clearance, and actually looks rather good. Beyond that you can get skid plates, engine guards, windscreens, hard or soft saddle bags, and all sorts of other factory options - and it won't break the bank in the process.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's not an unreasonable alternative to heavy weight "adventure touring" machines. There's something comforting about being able to pick up your bike if it topples over without risking a hernia or cerebral hemorrhage!

Thanks for the welcome everyone.
Arion, Im not quite that old...as they say its the mileage not the years.

Im not quite sold on any single. The easy choice would be a KLR or the mighty DR but...its a single and I want the smoothness of a twin.

I have things to learn and that is why I am here.
