Question for brain trust of Versys forum members

I've been riding for over 45 years and I'm now 60. I currently have four bikes in my stable and am thinking of trading in one for a 2016 Versys 650 LT. Solo touring is the main task this bike is targeted for.

One of my main questions is; Is the stator issue of earlier Versys 650 motor been corrected since the intro of the 2015 model?

Thanks for your time

Thanks for the response!

Oh, okay, so is it safe to assume the stator is a weak point for the motor?

I've only heard rumors and such, so from what I can gather, it's not a deal breaker, just something to look for after (fill in the blank) miles.

17K miles here on an '09 no problems if any kind. I have heard of a couple folks having stator issues, but I don't think it happens or will to everyone. I think I have seen more people crack the cover than break what's inside.

I put 30,000 miles on my '11 Versys with GPS, Denali lights, Skenedesign lights, Admorelighting lights, Heated vest, heated gloves, heated grips and never had an issue. I never rode the bike less than 20 miles at a time and those 20 miles were at 50 mph or above.

The versys is a great solo touring bike with the exception of keeping the chain clean, lubed and adjusted without a center stand.

When I get into it I will post if they upgraded the regulator, working on the bottom end of the bike, lowering link, stand, highway pegs / adjust chain and preload relocation. Lots of Speedy stuff.

FYI the problem of the stator has been addressed around 2011, however the regulator is the prime cause of failure. I have posted how to switch to a series regulator, Polaris or Compu-fire, hopefully the 2015 is a series regulator .

Wow, tons of great info, thanks so much! I'm glad to hear most have had few if any issues with the electrical.

My Candy Matte Orange 2016 650 LT will be here Tuesday, March 15th. Love that color. And looking forward to spending more time behind bars (of my new Versys)!

The stator and the RR are new for 2015+ bikes; higher capacity for the optional driving lights.

Post pics when you get your bike! You are the first orange 2016 I know of (and the best model/color combo imo). Most, if not all, the electrical issues are dumbass mistakes that are not documented. Japs are the hands down best in electronics in the world: you are worrying about the wrong thing.

Will do, however, my dealer tells me it won't be here until Thursday. He's probably waiting for the weather to turn bad, it's warm and clear today and tomorrow!

You guys are awesome, thanks again for the support!

I've owned two Versys, an 08 and now a 10 and never had an issue with the stator and I run high current drawing heated gear and a phone charger off the bike.

If it was an issue with some early bikes it does not appear to be an issue now.

The only real issue with the Versys I am aware of is buzz from the fairing and windshield area. It is most often due to mounting of larger aftermarket shields and can usually be fixed with the careful placement of some double sided foam weatherstripping tape between plastic panels. Lots of threads on this board on the subject. I do not believe this is an issue on 15+ bikes, perhaps due to the fact they were designed with a much larger stock screen and which nobody feels the need to replace.

Stater / Regulator

No and No
Regulator is shunt and 5 pins used, no brown key switch wire. Output is same as previous years. 24 amp at 14 VDC= 336 watts.

The location of the regulator is new for 2015, much easier to work on, if only the wire was one inch longer.
