St Louis, Missouri to The Dragon & More

.
Roughly 1650 miles, total.

Left Friday and returned Sunday. Clear skies for the entire trip.

It was in the mid-90's on Friday, and humid.

Saturday was a day at mild altitudes and much better temperatures. I wore a jacket all day.

Sunday turned into a real cooker - but that was later in the day - running interstate on the way back home.

Here's an interesting photo.

Portions of the movie "October Sky" were filmed in Oliver Springs, Tennessee.

This building was painted up for the movie.

If you run "The Devil's Triangle" then make sure to run thru the old part of town to get some of these photos.

Great photos. My "Envious Meter" just pegged itself. Great scenery and great signs as well. About the only sign I didn't notice was "Truckers, don't even think of trying to drive this road."

Still, I imagine there are truckers (and even worse, RV people) who think- and in their own minds, know - they can make it. And on their tombstones you'll probably find, "Oh yeah? Well, watch this!"

Nice. What did you think of The Snake? I rode it for the first time a couple years ago and got caught behind a school bus, but I gotta say that that driver even kept a reasonably entertaining pace going thru there.

That's the one thing the Dragon has over most every good road on the planet. No intersections, houses, businesses or anything else.

You would most likely take I-64 to I-57 South to I-24 East to I-40 East.

Or - I-64 East to I-75 South

We took I-55 south to Cape Girardeau and then MO 74 to IL146 to IL3 thru Cairo and on to Wickliff and then left on KY60 to Paducah and then picked up I-24 then I-40. Then picked up 68 at Crossville and headed SouthEast down to Telico Plains (Cherohala Skyway)

From there we rode the Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon and then headed up I-40 thru Knoxville to I-81 to I-26 to Johnson City and off onto 321 to Elizabethton and then 67 to Mountain City, TN to 421 (The Snake) to Bristol and then 81 to Marion Virginia and then 16 (Back of the Dragon) to Tazewell Virginia.

From there, I think it was 19/460 up to Lexington, KY and then I-64 back thru St Louis and then I-44 West home.

No matter where you go - there you are.

The Snake is nice.

The Back of The Dragon (Hwy 16 from Marion Virginia to Tazewell Virginia) is more challenging, longer, better scenery, everything - better than the Tail of the Dragon, The Snake, or the Cherohala Skyway.

My opinion.

I gotcha. Guess I'm going to have to get used to interstate driving. I've never been the biggest fan of it on bikes

We run the interstate because of the limited amount of vacation days. If I were retired, or independently wealthy.... I would stick to the two lane roads.

The interstate isn't all bad - at least all of the traffic is moving in the same direction and nobody pulls a tractor out in front of you from a side road.....
