My Wee Tour of Scotland - 9th to 12th April 2010

Part 1

Well I’m back and the trip was MEGGA, and I enjoyed it.

Weather was in a word “HOT” – I.e. no need for the M/C jacket thermal liner, even on Skye. Long may it last!

Route I ended up doing was as follows:-

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...88&ie=UTF8&z=7

Day 1 – Biggar to Skye – (Flodigarry Bunkhouse / Hostel)
Day 2 – Sightseeing round Skye
Day 3 – Skye to Aviemore via Applecross and Torridon.
Day 4 – Aviemore to Biggar via Glenshee.

Also this w/e I loaded the bike up with more than I needed just to see how it would be on the Euro trip that I am planning. I.e. getting the suspension preload and rebound setting right. There’s nothing worse than when abroad, finding out it doesn’t handle right going round an Alpine hairpin bend with a sheer drop on the outside edge

The other bikes I started riding with were:
Suzuki TL1000.
BMW K1000RS – 2 up.
Kawasaki GPZ600RR.

Needless to say they were just in it for the ride i.e. “Like bat out of hell everywhere, arse up, head down”.

While I was in it for the scenery, views, and the ride, in that order.
I.e. Easy rider but a bit faster than that. A proper Versys ride / Tour.
(I think there’s a couple of songs in this somewhere )

Day 1 - Biggar to Skye – (Flodigarry Bunkhouse / Hostel)

My Route –
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...17,7.23999&z=7

Not a lot of pictures, as i was having to race everywhere.
Inverary Harbour

Lost the rest of the group all at Fort William, as I had to stop for petrol. They went via Mallaig and the ferry, but I went on the better roads via Eilean Donan Castle.

and Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge to Flodigary. Made it to the bunkhouse @ 19:15 at least 1:30 hours ahead of them. As they had just missed the ferry at Mallaig and had to wait for the next one.

Day 2 – Sightseeing round Skye

Unfortunately as I had a migraine attack that night , so I decided to stay on Skye for an extra days sightseeing. Marvellous.

The rest of the group went on up to Tongue for the night – apparently they did not appreciate that the A roads on the west coast are mostly single track, tight and twisty and not really there sports bike style – shame it took them 11 hours to get to Tongue. Southerners, what do they expect, “Dual-carriageways / race tracks” everywhere.

Their Route ??

Part 3

At the top looking towards Skye where I have just come from 70 miles ago

The Applecross Inn

Back out via Bealach na Ba

Now at Loch Shiedaig

And Torridon

And a few more on the way to Aviemore

Then met up with the others at, Aviemore for the night.
They were tired and moaning about the roads
I slept well that night and keep them awake with my snoring

Day 4 – Aviemore to Biggar via Glenshee.

Route
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...854736&t=p&z=7

A bit cooler today, so did not bake so much. Said good by the rest of the gang, as all they wanted to do was blast down the A9

Sorry no pictures as I managed to drop the camera as loading the bike up and it would not work after that.

But a wonderful ride back, Snow still up at Glenshee, but it looks like it is melting fast.

Stopped at Spittle of Glenshee for brunch.

Best thing to come out of this trip – seeing crotch rockets trying to cope with the narrow Scottish Highland roads. My Versys was in it element.
But the moral of this trip is, just don’t arrange go with anyone you meet down the Pub without riding with them first, even though you are the trip instigator / planner no matter how long you have known them

Richard

Thanks for the great pics. I would love to see the countryside from a motorcycle, we traveled only by train in my UK trip.

Very nice ride and photos...for some reason I thought the terrain would be greener!

Steve

I bought a motorcycle because my wife said that I couldn't! Now I have two and she still says I can't have another one!
