MORE desert, MORE flowers, SOME "Old West" history....history

Put another 120 miles onto BIG RED today. Headed E onto the Florence-Kelvin Hwy, then took some side-roads just to see what was down there, as well as looking at the flowers that are coming out due to the AZ winter rains.

I rode these roads N till I got down into a "WARNING - DO NOT ENTER IF FLOODED" area which was dry, but WHEN roads flood here they can end up w/ DEEP sand when they are dry, and that can mean a "lay-down"

I will ADD more story, more pics tomorrow....

Very nice. Reminds me of our years in Alamogordo, NM. Love the desert.

Once I got back onto the Florence-Kelvin Road, headed E, in the distance the
tailings from the Ray Mine become visible just "this-side" of the mountains, as evidenced to the right of the Saguaro

and again in this shot

altho' the road itself is fun

w/ lots to see EVERYWHERE

including wildflowers

a riot-of-color, BOTH sides of the road

...and there's the tailings again...

as well as this old adobe 'shack' along the road a few miles before the junction w/ AZ 177

then MORE tailings as I traveled N by the Ray Mine

which was NOT open for visitors so I took some pics from the shoulder

Those trucks carry a HUGE amount per load, and they ARE visible (barely...!) in the center part of the pic ABOVE the truck close-up!

Traveling N from the mine is a SCENIC experience

w/ curvy roads

as well as UPS and DOWNS, and IN-BETWEENS....

Any of you watching the new reality show (on HISTORY) called "Legends of the Superstitions"...? IF you are, listen for mentions of "Weavers Needle" on and in their maps. That's Weavers Needle in the center of this pic on the skyline.

From there it's only a few miles to Superior, and the road is... SUPERIOR too!

Another view w/ Weavers Needle on the horizon

and a view of the range just E of Superior where, legend has it, local miners forced (or threw) Apache braves to their death back in the 1800s.

I can't remember EXACTLY when I learned that Wyatt Earp's wife, Mattie Blaylock Earp, is buried in a pioneer cemetary just N and a bit W of Superior, but IF you've watched either of the recent movies about Tombstone, you can see a very unhappy woman 'drowning' herself in laudanum (heroin) as Wyatt and his brothers deal w/ the OK Corral gunfight, but here are pics I took back in April 2009 of her memorial

For some reason people leave pennies as well as empty cartridge cases (THIS a .45 Colt one, as used in Colt Single Action Army revolvers).

Over the ensuing years I've gone back to the site, but over the last few there was nothing there, so I surmised that EITHER some people had removed the memorial (AND grave...?) to stop visits and vandals, or...?

Colt Single Action Army...

IF any of you aren't fully aware of EXACTLY what a Colt Single Action Army from back then looks like, here are THREE pics of one that was made in 1884 for the .45 Colt blackpowder cartridge (so is NOT safe to fire w/ smokeless powder cartridges).

THIS revolver features 'one-piece' ivory stocks w/ TWO notches cut into them, so I've often wondered WHAT the story on THOSE notches is...

so - IF it could ONLY speak....

Well, getting BACK to my story....

I decided that I would make the 'trek' to see whether or not I'd be able to find the grave/ memorial, riding along the unmarked desert road to the N of Picketpost Mountain, following VAGUELY familiar trails, then - VOILA - I saw this sign (and enclosure) which are BOTH new to me...

w/ this notice

After reading it I thought I'd walk in and see IF I could again find the grave. Minutes later I found THIS

again w/ some stuff added by visitors

altho' I don't see the significance of the candy canes, the quarters, OR the FMJ rifle cartridge...! I then backed up and framed this shot to include Picketpost Mtn to the S.

From there to my place is about a 30 minute ride mostly paved, after THIS

so I didn't stop for any more pics after hitting the pavement.

HOPE you enjoyed my little "history lesson"....
