One of our members here, Tom Edison, is always riding the forest roads around Darrington, WA on his KLX and posting ride reports and his wonderful photos on advrider. The last batch of photographs he posted inspired me to go looking for the same roads. It's a 75 mile hike for me to get to the starting point, 40 of which are interstate miles so instead of taking my own KLX, I headed out on the Versys. It looked like smooth forest roads but I had no idea what I would find. Hopefully nothing too gnarly ....
I had plotted out the route on the GPS but I soon discovered that once in the forest the roads on the ground bore no relation to the roads on the GPS. So I gave up on the GPS and just followed any road that went up! Thankfully we were on the right track and I managed to find the amazing vistas that Tom had pictured. There was a truly breathtaking moment as I crested the top of the hill and the landscape just opened out before me.
The Versys performed admirably in its new role as an adventure lite bike.
Thanks for the inspiration! Next up I want to hit 17 & 18. Almost did it yesterday but after doing White Chuck and then Rat Trap pass loop the XT I was with did not have enough gas to continue. So we headed back to Darrington and that was the end of the day. Hopefully I can squeeze it in before the snows come.
