Mendocino National Forest trip?

I'm planning a 2 day/1 night trip up to the Mendocino National Forest.

My plan...Start in SF, head up 101 (yes, there's a little super slab in here, but maybe this part will change a little) to Hopland. Head east on 175 towards Clear Lake, North on 29 to Upper Lake and head into MNF on Elk Mountain Rd and follow that up to Lake Pillsbury. There's at least one established campground there.

Day 2: (not set in stone) One thought is to continue North on Elk Mountain Rd to Forest Highway 7. Head west on FH7 towards Covelo, South on 162 to Mendocino, then either 101 back down or other scenic roads, depending on what folks are in the mood for or have the energy for.

Another option for day 2 would be to come back down Elk Mountain rd to Upper Lake, head over to 20 west towards 101.

The roads in MNF that I'm planning on taking are maintained by the county and are either paved (but may be kind of goaty) or maintained dirt roads. I was told that street bikes will be fine on these roads. I expect the Versys with street tires will manage.

I haven't decided when I'm doing this 2 day trip yet. I work most saturdays, but have sundays and mondays off. I also have some Weds and Thurs off and might decide on a mid-week trip (even if it's solo).

It would be great to get a couple of others or maybe a small group together for this. Any takers?

I did this trip a couple weekends ago. It was a blast! A relatively short portion of the road on day 2 was barely a road. The Versys managed with street tires, but it was hard! Probably would have been hard for me on a lighter bike with dirt tires too, but I don't plan on doing that road again on the Versys loaded down. Certainly not alone, maybe with another rider. That was Road M1 from Lake Pillsbury up to Hull Mountain.

I'm heading back up there on the first leg of my trip to Washington. I'll leave July 22 (my birthday). I think I'll either do M6 from Lake Pillsbury north to Forest Highway 7 (it should be maintained dirt/gravel) or just head west from Lake Pillsbury out through Potter Valley and then up north. We'll see...

If anyone wants to join me for the trip up to Lake Pillsbury, let me know...
