Help with good Virginia roads

My buddy and I are riding from East TN to Front Royal, VA to ride the Skyway and Parkway home. We really want to stay of I81 (or any other fast 4-lane) heading north. What roads are good alternatives, and any must stop dive resteraunt along the way?

Route 60 is great and The Palms is a nice sandwich/burger joint in Lexington.

A lot of people really like Route 56 but I don't care for it. It can be a lot of fun if you get lucky and aren't trying to make time. It's twisty and beautiful but most of the corners have gravel in them all the time for some reason. You're also likely to get stuck behind a slow moving car or log truck.
