Takin' a ride for BBQ (Blacks, Lockhart Tx)...

...and I can't think of a better reason!

We've had this on going discussion at work about ribs & BBQ. Some say this place is better,
others say that place is better. So a few of us decided to take a ride to one of the more well
known places, Lockhart Texas. Yes, there are quite a few in & around San Antonio, but
what fun would that be?

The meeting place was set, believe it or not, in the parking lot of Rooty's BBQ in Selma, just
north east of San Antonio. Now some say Rooty's is VERY good BBQ, but I've eaten there a
few times & wasn't impressed. It's not bad, mind you, just not as good as some people say.
But today it was just our starting point, no eating.

Lining up the hogs (get it? Hogs? We're going for BBQ?)...

Twin Vulcans...

Harley & 'Busa...

'Nother Harley. There's also a Suzuki Boulevard, but he somehow managed to avoid getting shot...

Once we're on the road, we didn't stop much for pictures. I mean really, how many photo ops
are there on a 90-ish mile ride?

We make our way along & come to one of my favorite views, a scenic overlook on a stretch of
road called "The Devil's Backbone". I've posted pics of this place before. And again, I have to
say, the pictures don't do it justice...

Sharing a moment...

What a mean looking biker gang...

The Bear himself (on the left)...

Proof we made it to our destination...

Black's BBQ in Lockhart, Tx. MMMMMmmmm..... BBQ....

There are a few BBQ joints in Lockhart. Black's was touted as 'the best' by a member of the
group, so Black's it was! Kreuz & Smitty's are two other well known BBQ places in town. We'll
have to make another trip up that way, you know, for the sake of comparison.

You'd think I'd know by now, take the damned camera inside & get pics of the fixin's. I guess I
get caught up in the smells & it scrambles my thinkin' circuits. Oh well.

The food was good. I had ribs & brisket. The brisket was tender & delicious. The ribs were good,
but I've had better. The sides were good, but not great. Overall, as I said, good, not great.

The ride there & back was fun, everybody seemed to enjoy it. The weather was perfect!
There were butt loads of bikes out.

And for you TWTexans, we rode right through Kyle, right past the 'pie run'. I saw a lot of bikes
outside the restaurant. Didn't see a Versys, though I know Mike (POTUS2012) & his wife were
there. That's ok Mike, I'll see you in October!

Well, that's all for this round, folks.

Thanks for tuning in....

Nice ride and pics Bear. To bad there isn't even a good BBQ joint in the Bay Area...Lot of folks think our local Popeye Chicken is "real" Southern BBQ...
What I really dig in your pics is the gentleman with the green high viz jacket and the chrome hub cap for the helmet...Make it easier for the EMP's to put his face parts in ;-)

If I new what I was doing, I wouldn't still be working

I know you, & a lot of our members are pro ATGATT, but I would appreciate it if that argument didn't make it into this. Let's leave it as, "I ride my ride, you ride your ride" or "live & let live", thanks.

Speaking of chain stores, & I'm probably going to get crap for this, but I think Tony Roma's & Chili's ribs are some of the best ribs I've ever had. In fact, there's a Chili's right around the corner from me that cooks one of THE best ribeye steaks I've ever eaten.

The Devils back bone makes me think of the song by Todd Snyder.
Any how looked fun & it's making me hungry!

No, but I've read a few good reviews. Looks like it would be a good day's ride there & back. Maybe a good trip for the future...

Coopers is good... but nothing in the world touches The Salt Lick. It's in Driftwood. I don't care what the ride is like... it's worth it. BYOB and if the weather's nice get there early. Live bands on the weekends under the oaks. Do yourself a favor... give it a try.

A noble cause

Yep, bikes, bbq, beer... and what's the other essential "B"? Oh yeah!
Some of my favorite rides have been in search of good food. It may be heresy, but I prefer Texas bbq over our Tarheel variety. I like it all, but the dry Texas beef ribs are really hard to beat. I don't care much for the sweet sauces. Kansas City and Memphis are prime destinations for superb bbq too and throw in some outstanding blues joints to go with the good eatin'.

Don't you think that it's a ^%#$&# shame that Hunter S. Thompson wasn't an adventure rider? Imagine the ride reports...!

I'll be heading to Salt Lick soon. Been by there a few times & have heard great things about them, now it's time for a trip there. So where in Texas are you? Anywhere near San Antonio???

Don't worry buddy, it was back in September. We're having our share of cold weather. We even had snow yesterday. It didn't stick, but it made headlines...

But rest assured, there will be MANY more of these this year. I can't think of a better reason to ride, besides riding of course, than to ride for food. Why do you think they call me 'Bear'??

Bear,

I'm up in Abilene. I've got some family in Beorne and Medina.
Hoping to come down and ride some of those great roads this summer.

Please note... Salt Lick is cash only, too.
