Went for another 170 miler yesterday w/ QUITE a bit of it dirt. Rode thru the desert looking for cactus flowers for pics, but it was a GREAT day for riding, and I found that riding near 60 mph on dirt didn't leave much of my "attention-span" free to look for flowers....
My ride encompassed the Florence-Kelvin Road, the Barkerville Road to the Freeman Road, then thru the San Pedro River near Dudleyville followed by a (VERY) few paved miles on AZ 77 to the Aravaipa Canyon Road which starts paved, but soon deteriorates to VERY rough, washboard gravel/ rock, for around a dozen miles.
I closed up on a silver cage w/ two young chicks in it just as the gravel started, so ate dust till I could find a passing place, and 'buzzed' by them. It's a very picturesque area and contains some ranches that appear to go "way back", most nestled down by a small river (creek?), mountains all around.
Finally I saw a hint of color, stopped for a few pics, then on to the state park where trail-heads start, for a brief rest stop and hydration, then headed back west on that road just as the two chicks pulled in to the parking area.
I finished up the ride by heading west on the Florence-Kelvin Road (LOTS of dirt, not TOO many cactus flowers, altho' I took the pic of the ocotillo w/ all the red flowers along that road), then a few paved miles and... HOME... to a nice chilled martini after I WD'd my chain.
As I only got a very few pics of cactus flowers on this ride, I've decided to add a bunch of cactusflower pics I took the other day in my neighborhood here in Florence - this is the BEST I've seen since coming here!
