Riding to Robbinsville, NC

http://griztrax.net/backroads/WestWNC/WestRide.htm

It was a full weekend, with a trip to Chimney Rock to watch storms roll through, followed by a terrific day of rambling through the western mountains of NC on Sunday. We met early in Brevard and headed west, cutting through Wolf Lake, the Elijay Road between Cullowhee and Franklin, the Wayah Road between Franklin and the Nantahala Gorge, and then 107 over to Robbinsville. Jon wanted to check out the dual sport rentals at Thunder Mountain - he and his brother have a trip planned to the area in June and plan to rent from the folks at Thunder Mountain.
Since we were in the area, I figured that we might as well touch base with the Cherohala - a quick photo at the eastern end of that and we were off to Deals Gap for burgers. Man, I love the burgers at the Gap. From the Gap, we hit 28 back over to Franklin - one of the best rides in the south, IMHO.
And then it was on home over the mountains east of Highlands to Brevard.
Man, I need a sponsor - work is really screwing with my riding.

Beautiful pics VeewNC! You got me really excited for my upcoming trip to that area come mid June. It's next to impossible to make a wrong turn in that area. Every road I have been on has been fantastic. Namely the cherahola (sp!) Hwy. Love that road! Thanks for sharing!

Talking

I spent Thursday through Sunday up there with a group of about 18 bikes. We stayed at Docks Motel in Townsend, TN. The people that run the place are great and motorcycle enthusiast. We were able to run the Dragon quite a few times, ran up and down the BRP, did 28 several times and we were lucky enough to ride the Cherohala in a downpour after I dropped my V on a muddy corner on the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Highway.

You are right, you can turn on just about any road in that area and have a great ride. The Foothills Parkway is also a nice ride. I will post some pics a little later.

Steve

I bought a motorcycle because my wife said that I couldn't! Now I have two and she still says I can't have another one!

I often stay at Docs when I'm in that area. There is another really nice motel just past Docs on the other side of the highway - I think that it's called Headricks. It's quiet and clean, and family run. If one is full, I always try the other.
Some of the little back roads below the Foothills Parkway are a ball to ride. Some are barely one lane wide, but the scenery is fantastic and there is hardly any traffic at all on them. Since I got the Vee, I prefer to camp and the Look Rock campground on the Foothills Parkway is seldom crowded, even on holiday weekends. It's a great place to stay and only minutes from the Dragon.

Looked like you had good wether. Diddo on the sponsorship. I have been cut down to trying to ride the gap on late afternoons me and my buddy went up there tues. evening
and really had a good time. It was after 6:30 but we still got in two rides. Little to no traffic. Some time you want to ride let me know only an hour away from the gap or cherahoya. Like to get to know a few other areas in NorthCarolina Chimney rock is one of them. Go to the Gap at least every other week or as aften as work will allow.

A fellow V owner at work and I are trying to put something together to get up there again soon. I will let you know when we are going to be there. I also want to go to Chimney Rock...it looks really cool.

I was up in Robbinsville on Thursday. Just made a loop thru Joyce Kilmer from the Gap to R'Ville, over 143 to 28 back to the Gap and home in Maryville.

The Versys loves the mountains and I'm loving the Versys!

Keep me posted when you guys are going back in the area and we'll hook up.
