Lunch and Lean

What does Mexican food and State Route 245 have in common? Together they cause you to commit lunch and lean...aka a fun winter lunch ride.

Getting too cold and wet for riding in the Sierra high lands so I did a really fun low altitude ride on Thursday. Headed out to the little farm town of Orosi to try a Mexican restaurant I had not visited before. After reading all the reviews about how they were the place for seafood tacos I ordered one. They bring out this sucker that was not only loaded with fish and shrimp on the inside but was also buried under a ton of shrimp too. Would have easily fed two people. I could not finish it and walked out with a case of pot belly bulge and a big smile on my face.

Then headed east out of town to connect with the 245 which is one of my favorites. Zero traffic but did have to watch out for some oak leaves and an occasional splat of cow dukie. They run a lot or range cattle in the area and this time of the year they take them out in trailers giving them opportunity to paint the road.

Most of the pics are from the leg over to the 245. Also snagged a couple of pics of the distant Sierra's with a big stack of "Lennies" over the top. My pilot friends on the forum will know what Lennies are, especially those that have any sailplane time. The proper term is Alto Cumulus Standing Lenticular. These clouds indicate a mountain wave is in progress. The more powerful waves will produce very strong up and down drafts.

The Sierra wave was discovered by a B-25 pilot who was attempting to land at an airport just east of the Sierra's but had to hold while waiting for the strong surface winds to die down. While holding he discovered the strong updraft and begin to play around with it. Eventually he shut down both engines and soared in the updraft for several hours with both engines off. Later when the surface winds died down he re-lit the engines and landed. And now you know the rest of the story.

Cheers.

GREAT pics, Tim, but I ALWAYS tried to avoid lenticular cap clouds (saw lots near Calgary in the lee of the "Rocks").

Oh yea I dodged more than a few over the Rockies.

That wave could be brutal. I remember several times having to go to flight idle to keep the airspeed from going past red line while hollering at ATC for a block altitude. Definitely wakes one up from all those "hours of boredom."

I've had plenty of wave encounters but never a bad experience with lenticulars.

I remember one early morning just at dawn westbound, descending for Reno. We were probably in the upper teens for altitude, solid IMC for quite a while. Suddenly we got a little bump like going over a speed bump just a little bit too fast, and we were out in clear air. As far as we could see in either direction it was layers of lenticulars which we had just exited midway in the stack.

The worst wave encounters have been near the Colorado/New Mexico border near the front range, and in the Cheyenne Wyoming area. All in clear air in the mid to upper 30's flight levels. From flight idle to keep from overspeeding with a serious vertical speed to max continuous thrust while descending and airspeed decaying. It definitely breaks up the boredom!

Good o'l RNO. Used to go in there a lot, in the E-120, when I was flying for Westair. When the Pacific storms come on shore it's not uncommon to have 100kt wind gusts over the peaks just west of the airport. Got to "enjoy" severe turbulence many times on descent. Next day off had to go to the dentist to have my fillings tightened back up and also the chiropractor to de-compress my back! Lol.

In 40 years of flying I only saw a pirep reporting extreme turbulance one time and guess where? Yep in the Reno area. It was legit as it was reported by a P3 Orion. That place can really show it's teeth from time to time.

Hawkerjet, I like that term "lunch and lean". Mind if I borrow/steal it once in a while?

Gofer it Steve. Be my guest.

Actually it was lean/lunch/lean cuz the taco shop was an hour from the house. So got to do some leaning on the way there.

Flowriduh huh? Where abouts? My last flying job was with Fidelity Title. Their corporate office is in Jax. Nice in the winter but shore bee hot and muggy in dah summer. Lots of summer storms too for you to try out your rain gear...Lol.

Thanks.

I live in Tavares in Lake County, near the "Swiss Alps of Flowriduh". Our town is next to Mont Dora, a cool place to visit. Yeah, summers are tough. That's why I spend them at altitude out west.

Some of the back roads here are actually decent riding with little traffic, real curves and a hill or three. Ya just gotta know where to go. But it ain't No GA, or NC, or CA, or CO.
