Final Ride

O'l Hawkerjet is hanging up his spurs. Took my final ride into the sunset a couple of days ago. My old back just can't take it any longer.

Had back surgery last May. Was not the result I was hoping for. I stayed off the bike for a couple of months then eased very slowly back into riding. Then did a fairly big 2 day ride last month. Hit some pretty big bumps and my back said that is enough.

It's been a good run. Lot's of miles and smiles. Guess it's time to act my age and pull out the rocker and take up basket weaving...Lol.

Have fun guys and ride safe.

Cheers mates.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I hope you find another activity you can be equally passionate about, but without the pain.

Yeah, getting older sucks. Like previous posters said, hopefully there's another hobby or 3 needing your attention! Good luck and try to enjoy life!

what did you use to help with the back pain on the longer rides?

where is the pain coming from? bumps? getting tired and having a bad position of the back (curved) ?
where is the pain located? lower back? mid back?

Have had degenerative disc disease for the last 20 years or so. It took a major turn for the worse 2 years ago. L4 thru S1 (very typical) is where most damage is. L5/S1 pretty much bone on bone. Tried the decompression surgery in May which made things much worse. Major burning numbness in feet and butt. Lots more pain in lower back since surgery. When I hit a big bump on the bike I can feel it hammer my lower back. My symptoms get better and back feels better when I stay off the bike for a few weeks. My short ride 3 days ago took me right back to worse symptoms and back pain so it is time to hang it up.

Sorry to hear that! But when one door closes. Another one opens.
No need for a rocker. You will renew your passion(s) in your next journey.
Whether it's your family, friends, community, or your next hobby.
Wish you all the best.

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

I had my last long ride in July......I'll putt around locally and around the Black Hills but that's about it. Not sure how long I'll be able to do that. Hopefully a couple of years at least.

Good luck with your new hobbies.

Gonna miss Hawkerjet chiming in on the forum, always interesting. Im approaching geezerdom myself and Im spending more and more time keeping my body in an acceptable state. Having to lower the bar a bit every year! I cant say that motorcycling is good for my body but it sure is great for my mental well being. Ive maintained a tricky back with exercise and hanging upside down on my gravity table, then wearing back support when riding. Yoga type stretching is also great for an aging body. But I hear ya,it doesnt get any easier. Pain is the ultimate humbler.

So sorry to see you go!I’ve hardly been riding the last two years because of multiple health issues myself. The worst being reoccurring vertigo. Gotta have balance to ride! I wont ride if I’m not 100%

My wife has actually encouraged me to keep the bike since she knows how much riding has meant to me. We’ve been married 50 years and she’s never known me without a bike! Great woman!

I enjoy and stay on the forum even when I’m not riding.

Thanks guys for all the kind words.

Riding off into the sunset or going quietly into the night...both are way overrated!

So sorry to hear this news. I do hope you at least haunt this place from time to time. It’s a much better experience with your voice in it. If not, I understand. Either way, here’s to discovering your next chapter. Write it beautifully, my friend.
