Riding thru AZ and UT, w/out REALLY checking the weather forecast... AGAIN!

IF this ride seems to bring back memories maybe look at another I did a few years ago - "Another run to Monument Valley (or - how I learned to check the weather forecasts)"...https://www.kawasakiversys.com/forums...ad.php?t=17451....

Got back down to AZ on 15 October, got the car and bike running, the house issues settled, then asked my neighbor Bill IF he was UP for another ride w/ me. He answered that leaving Friday, 25 Oct for five days (or four) would work for him, so we settled on that, motels NOT tents, got our bikes ready.

The weather forecast that Friday showed nothing but blue skies, temp 'HI's around 65F up N (80F near PHX!) so we suited-up and 'hit the road' at 0700 on BIG RED, my '08 V650, and Bill's '06 Goldwing.

Our routing was via the Bush Hwy to the Beeline Hwy (AZ 87) thru Payson to Clints Well, then N on AZ 3, where we stopped for lunch and our FIRST pic near Morman Lake

IMG_0001 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

then via Flagstaff, where we took AZ 89 N past the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, thru Navaho country w/ its breathtaking scenery, a line of ridges on the E side

IMG_0002 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0003 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

and then the Vermillion Cliffs coming into view further N.

IMG_0004 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

At the point where AZ 89 ALT splits off W, AZ 89 turns due E then climbs a cliff

IMG_0005 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

then thru a narrow gap (where I made SURE nobody was coming when I pulled over for the NEXT pic)!

IMG_0006 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

About 10 miles further, there's a (pay fees) area to park, then to walk in about 1.5 miles to visit the Horse Shoe Bends.

IMG_0007 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0008 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0009 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0010 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

And here's the view of the parking from the 'walk back'.

IMG_0011 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

From there we rode about four more miles to Page, AZ, where we rode into the downtown to get a reasonable motel near a 'batch' of restaurants.

On our 'walk' we surveyed the 'scene' and decided that a margarita followed by Chinese food would be GREAT, but after a couple of them - margaritas (and taco chips & salsa!!!) - we decided to stay there for supper.

VG dinner and drinks to finish off our day's ride of 335.7 miles.

We plan on hitting the AZ/NM high country in May of next year. Hint on the place that you got the margaritas?

Hint 1 - it's in Page,AZ;
...hint 2 - it's downtown on the E side of the street; and
...hint 3 - it's name is: FIESTA MEXICANA!

HIGHLY recommended, Steve!

DAY 2 - 26 Oct '19 heading to the North Rim, then N into UTAH!

The motel we stayed at included a hot breakfast, so Bill and I were down and in-line by 0630 along w/ a HUGE number of Japanese tourists. The coffee was VG, altho' the scrambled eggs were basically tasteless, but the sausages added ALMOST enough flavor to 'salvage' brekkie.

We had the bikes loaded by sun-up then headed back S, heading for AZ 89ALT, and I was hoping for a better pic of that "gap".

First pic taken as we approached the 'gap', a few miles N.

IMG_0013 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Next few were taken AT the 'gap'....

IMG_0014 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0015 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0016 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

When we reached the bottom, then turned N onto 89A I stopped for a look at the Vermillion Cliffs which are just W of the Colorado River.

IMG_0017 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Before we started the 'ride' I realized that I had left the battery-charger for my camera batteries back in our house in BC, so I'd ordered ANOTHER (c/w the 12V connections for the Versys) from EBAY, planned to arrive on Friday the 25th in the afternoon of the day we would leave on the ride, so I was concerned about having enough battery power to get thru four days riding thru some of the MOST incredible scenery imaginable w/ ONLY one fully-charged battery.... Oh well....!

The road has lots of twisties so we just rode, and then 55 miles later at Jacobs Lake we turned S onto AZ 67 for the 42 miles to the North Rim Nat'l Park gates.

Got 'checked-in', then several miles later began getting pics of one of the most beautiful areas on Earth!

North rim is quite awesome. Was it cold there?

I was there for a few days in July of '18 and had pleasant weather with highs in the mid 80's.

DAY 2 - 26 Oct '19 heading to the North Rim, then N into UTAH! - continued...!

If memory serves - it's about 17 miles down to the Lodge, and the ending of the North Rim drive, so w/out further ado....

A gratuitous motorcycle pic....

IMG_0025 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Then MORE scenery!

I'm PRETTY sure that the next three pics are from the ONLY place that you can see the Colorado River from either the South or North Rims....

IMG_0036 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

On the way N from the Park gates, we passed a gas station selling 'regular' for $3.66/G, so we were surprised to see gas selling at $3.99/G at the Jacobs Lake store, so we ONLY put in ONE gallon each, figuring gas HAD to be less expensive in Kanab, UT, just 37 miles N!

Which it WAS!!! - at $2.79/G there.

Just S of Fredonia, AZ I took this pic into UTAH

followed by the Red Canyon on UT 12 after we turned E from UT 89, just bypassing Bryce Canyon.

We decided to 'turn-in' for the night, and found lodging in Cannonville, UT, where several restaurants 'beckoned' to us, so PIZZA seemed a pretty good idea, washed down by a 'craft beer IPA'!

We had added a further 334 miles on 'Day 2', looking forward to MORE tomorrow! And so far the camera was taking pics for ME!

Day 3 - 27 Oct - riding MOSTLY in UTAH!

Because UTAH has daylight saving time, the clocks SEEMED a bit 'wonky' when we got up BEFORE daybreak, shaved and showered then to the 'office' for the FREE breakfast of pancakes, HOT coffee, and buns, then grabbed an orange for later (lunch), packed our bikes, suited-up, then headed NE along the N edge of the "Grand Staircase-Escalante Nat'l Monument" in the brilliant morning sunshine.

IMG_0044 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Couldn't resist this view of the backlit aspens....

IMG_0045 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

A few miles further along UT 12, the road follows the TOP of a ridge which I'm told REALLY 'freaks-out' some travelers

IMG_0046 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

and it's HARD to find a safe place to stop for pics

IMG_0047 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Just past Escalante the UT 12 road turns N, and into the town of Boulder which has the BURR Trail - UT 1668 heading MOSTLY E from there, and some-kinda-pretty!!!

IMG_0048 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0049 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0050 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

There is a 'slot canyon' along the N edge, and my riding buddy, Bill, decided to stop there while I continued E to the end of the trail to where it becomes dirt.

IMG_0051 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0052 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

I made the U-turn, still taking pics (I wonder how many more pics I can take before the camera battery quits...?)...

IMG_0053 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0054 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0055 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0056 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0057 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

...and pretty soon I could see Bill, at the side nearest the 'slot-canyon', parked BIG RED, grabbed my camera and entered the 'slot'.

IMG_0058 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0059 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0060 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

After several minutes we headed back to the bikes, ready to ride BACK, then to have a coffee and 'warm-up' in Boulder.

IMG_0061 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

On the ride IN, I had noticed this Table-Rock, so I paused to photograph it

IMG_0062 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

then into town for that coffee.

Day 3 - 27 Oct - riding MOSTLY in UTAH!...continues...!

After the coffee-break we got back onto UT 12 to Torrey

IMG_0063 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

where we turned E onto UT 24, heading for Hanksville. The continuous blue skies we had become used to were NOW starting to add hints of grey, and getting seriously darker. I began praying that we would avoid precipitation - especially as the temperature indicated that there MIGHT be snow in those blackening clouds!

IMG_0064 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0065 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

We 'made' Hanksville w/out rain or snow, then turned toward blue skies S along UT 95 - YIPPEE!

IMG_0066 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0067 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

The temperature was rising TOO, so the day looked like a "winner". 95 crosses the Colorado River just after it crosses the Dirty Devil River

IMG_0068 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0069 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

heading into typical shades-of-red UTAH mountains.

IMG_0070 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0071 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

We had been planning to overnight at Mexican Hat, UT, just NE of Monument Valley, as Bill wanted to visit Natural Bridges Nat'l Monument near the confluence of UT 95 and UT 261, the road that includes the "Moki Dugway", a 'rather' interesting way down a cliff (1,000' ?)

At the Bridges I was disappointed w/ the fact that to REALLY see them, you'd have to do a hike down the 'hill' to get to them, but I tried a few pics from the rim.

There's a bridge in the center - look for aspens thru it....

IMG_0072 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0073 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0074 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

VERY pretty area!

IMG_0075 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

And another 'bridge'...

IMG_0076 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

IMG_0077 by Ed Copeman, on Flickr

Bill chatted w/ some people there who mentioned that the forecast was for SNOW, so we changed our plans to ride thru Monument Valley, down to Kayenta, AZ, a Navaho Town at the S end, and 'motel-it' there.

We rode down the Dugway, and at the bottom I decided to take a pic of my GPS display to show how MANY switchbacks it contains, only to get a "RECHARGE BATTERY" display - I was no longer going to be able to take any pics on this ride - DAMN!

Day 3 - 27 Oct - ...contines...riding INTO AZ!

I was unhappy about my camera till Bill said he'd 'share' the pics from his camera - GREAT!

The remaining pics were taken by my riding buddy - Bill Blecker. THANK YOU!!!

The spires were in shadow due to the setting sun, and I looked forward to seeing some great silhouettes...!

We were getting tired, so we "beat-it" thru the rest of Monument Valley, then pulled up to a likely-looking motel, got a room, found out that as it's a Navaho reservation - it's 'dry', so supper wouldn't include any beers.

Got the bikes set-up, turned on the TV to watch the World Series.

Today had added about 378 miles to a PDG ride. Wonder what tomorrow will bring...?
