SOME Arizona dirt...!

The forecast for yesterday here in Florence, AZ, was 35F over night, followed by a daytime high of 70F, so I planned for a dirt-ride, HOPING that all the 'wet' from the rains we had over the last few weeks would dry up - "dirt-roads" around here become IMPASSABLE when wet, [or even damp] at least as far as motorcycles are concerned.

IF you've seen my ride-reports over the years, this'll ALL be familiar, but here was my route anyway: from home via E on the Hunt Hwy and S on AZ 79 thru Florence to the Florence-Kelvin Hwy which heads E a few miles S of town, then to the Barkerville Rd about 15 miles E of 79, then S on it to the Freeman Rd, maybe 20 miles (dirt!), and E on IT another 20 miles (dirt!) to the San Carlos River, thru it, then into Dudleyville, and HORROR OF HORRORS - pavement on AZ 77 N to Winkelman. Another left turn there onto AZ 177, then after 20 miles - back onto dirt E on the Florence-Kelvin Hwy, and W to AZ 79, and a reverse of the first bit of today's ride, back to home.

W/out further 'ado' - this is heading S on the Barkerville Rd....[unfortunately this trip did NOT 'rustle-up' any long-horn cattle where I usually see some.]

At the STOP sign I turned E onto the Freeman Rd passing the old "Barkerville" site, then continued E....

(the geography of this rock-face was kind of interesting...)

...and the ride continues....

still E, on the Freeman Rd...

Whenever I talk to other riders about riding these dirt roads I ALWAYS try to emphasize that being able to get into a 'standing-position' on the foot-pegs really quickly, w/ your weight BACK, can 'save your bacon', especially when you notice a 'wash' visible on BOTH sides of the road (USUALLY a 'dip' at the bottom of a rise), as there can be DEEP sand/gravel there in the road right where you are headed, that flowed out from the wash under flooding. It CAN whip your front wheel to the side, putting you on your side [not a great idea out here in the "wilderness"!] and can hurt you.

I do NOT have any pics of that stuff, as I'm up on my 'pegs trying to get thru W/OUT crashing!

W/OUT further ado - E on Freeman Rd:

(those are the Tortilla Mountains coming into view...)

(as well as the 'stacks' at Winkelman)

[because of the rainy winter weather, flowers are blooming earlier than usual)

But first I had to cross the San Pedro River just W of Dudleyville, pretty much the E end of the Freeman Rd.

Thankfully ONLY about a foot deep at this time!

Dudleyville, Winkelman and back onto DIRT!

You've seen pavement before, but after getting onto AZ 77, headed N I saw this abandoned home above the highway

followed by a good view of the Winkelman 'stacks' just as the turn N onto AZ 177 comes up....

FINALLY (20 miles further N) the Florence-Kelvin Rd sign comes into view, and it's W towards the dirt, but first - an old adobe home beside the F-K...,

and then back on the dirt, headed W.

about 15 (or so) miles later, pavement starts, and my pics STOP, except for my GPS at home, around half an hour later.

Of the total mileage of 127, I figure that 50 miles was on dirt, ONLY a mile or so of which I'd term it "gnarly", but the MILE certainly grabbed my attention!

NICE way to spend from noon to 1545, On JANUARY 25th...!

Wow, I have lived here, going on 10 years now. Sad to say, but I have not explored much out your way. But that needs to change. Those dirt roads seemed to be in decent condition. Other than crossing you pictured. Sounded like one terrific day. Thanks for sharing.

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Thanks for this report Eddie. We've been having an unseasonably warm winter here, but there is a cold snap heading our way so its a treat to see this. I'm tempted to load up the bike and head in a southerly direction myself!

IF you mean the San Pedro River - it's been "no big deal" ANY of the times I've ridden thru there, but I would NOT go near there during the monsoon season!

TRY it - you'll LIKE it...! (Of course it's STILL cold in the 'high country'...!)

the Florence-Kelvin AGAIN, 12 Feb '19!

I rode both ways across the Florence-Kelvin Hwy three days ago, another 125 mile ride, and I'll JUST add some more pics to "whet-your-whistles" about riding around here.

NICE way to spend a few hours...!

[Pics 6 and 7 show the F-K from about 3 or 4 miles W of the start at the E end, at AZ 177 - that's IT cutting thru the center, right to left.]
