for all you SHUT-INS: ANOTHER AZ ride!

Despite my usual practice of NOT riding on weekends, yesterday was forecast to get UP to about 70F, so about 1000 hrs I 'suited-up', my Tourmaster heated jacket-liner under my riding jacket, my USUAL leather riding gloves in my saddlebag, replaced (at least INITIALLY!) by some Hi-vis heavier gloves. Started BIG RED, turned the jacket-liner ON to Medium, heated grips on Medium too, then headed N.

Today's plan was to ride N from Florence on AZ 79, E on AZ 60 to Superior transitioning to AZ 177 to Winkelman, followed by NE on AZ 77 thru Globe and Miami, then back on 60 to 79 and home. ALL the heat was working, the skies were BRILLIANT blue - GREAT day for riding! I filled up the tank in Superior (got just over 50 mpgUS), then took the first exit to 177.

A few miles down the road I took these pics back towards Picketpost Mountain

then enjoyed some twisties till I got to this pass

and took pics of this mining venture just W of 177

and that's Picketpost again, w/ Weavers Needle just to its right on the horizon.

ANOTHER gratuitous pic of the bike

then OVER the pass to more twisties!

heading SOUTH...

The Ray Mine is just around a few more corners, and I thought that the 'play' of the light on this mound of 'mine-tailings' was interesting

as was the terracing on the E side of the mine.

A few more miles S and the road passes Hayden where I took this pic of a back-lit cholla (pronounced CHOY A) - nice looking, but NO FUN if you step on one, or get snagged...!

On top of the ridge to the E, on the skyline, I could see a cross....

It would be interesting to know "the story" about it, but I'm TOO OLD to climb THAT hill!

After Winkelman, now on 77 and headed NE I saw this.

It's quite difficult to turn a 180 to go back when you see something like that, but I DID that time!

No more pics until I was out of Globe headed W, and this mine near "Pinto Creek" I believe.

These are BIG mines!

Gassed-up again in Superior, and took these two pics going over Gonzales Pass, the "Valley of the Sun" (Greater Phoenix area) in the distance.

A few minutes later I turned S onto 79; 10 more later W on Arizona Farms Rd, then Attaway Rd and home.

The day's ride consumed 164 miles over just LESS than five hours.

NICE way to spend a January day...!

(Followed OF COURSE by a cold brewski...!...)

I love the wild country , just untouched. Thanks for sharing. Just a thought, what happen if your take a fall or breakdown as there seem to be no traffic at all.

Looked like a great day of riding! You surprised me by taking a ride on a weekend. Just kidding. I will have to make that ride one day myself. Looks like some great terrain.

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

The buzzards / vultures that will soon be circling above. Will definitely alert someone.

I would plan my route and provide my wife with a printed map. I would let her know what time to expect me back home. That meant that I couldn't vary too much from that route if I wanted any chance of being found if something happened. I also carried enough water for 3 days and some food in my backpack.

There's a fair amount of traffic. I must have seen 20 to 30 motorcycles, as well as a LOT of 'cages'.

On THAT ride some years back..., [right across from the Ray Mine] I had a turkey vulture "flush" from the side just as I came around a curve, missing me by INCHES.

I was going about 60 mph and it scared the hell out of me!

Basically, EXCEPT for the printed map, I did all of that, and DO when I'm off on a ride.

I am surprised the vultures did not find you off course somewhere if you went South from Florence on AZ 79 to get to E bound AZ 60.

You know I just gotta pick on you every chance I get because I envy the lengths and off road skills of your rides/Chuck

Forty years away from 2 wheel fun. Sure is great to be back smelling the roses!!!

My phone said -24C the other night (-11.2F), -19C now. That is without any wind chill exaggeration. Cold enough to make starting a car without a block heater difficult and a diesel near impossible. Cold enough to burn the exposed skin on your face in 30 seconds and make loud sounds when you walk and compress the dry, powder snow underfoot - or kill anyone without a source of warmth and insulation with ~1/2hr exposure.

Arizona sounds awesome but the skiing probably sucks

Eddie, thanks for the preview. Weather depending(lows not much below freezing) we'll be staying a few days near Superior. ( I may have mentioned that somewhere already. CRS.)

See y'all soon.

Yeah, if you want true ram air tuning, you better be willing to ram some air! (SteveinSunnyFlorida)

Hell Chuck - I ONLY went "off-road" when I went onto the shoulder to take pics.

I went back to check my first poSt - which (at least on MY 'putor ) says N. BTW - you CAN get to AZ 60 by going around 25,000 miles S from Florence, starting w/ AZ 79, a LOT of which might be "off road" or a 'touch' WET....

I grew up in Edmonton, delivered papers (at 13 years old) at -40 (F or C - take your pick!); worked in the oil-patch at COLDER than -40 (!!!); and loaded airplanes at Edmonton International Airport in January of '65 or '66 during a storm of -40 w/ a 40 mph wind - THAT windchill was -104F as near as I remember!

YOU "Easterners" are sissies....
