TWO AZ rides... the ALPHA and OMEGA...!

I decided to head out for a ride on Monday, as it was FINALLY warming up here (we've had two weeks of unseasonably cold weather, w/ nights of "hard-frost"), so I decided to head W to Gila Bend (God knows WHY - the route has very FEW turns of any import, starts at about 1400' ASL, and ENDS at about 1400' ASL!), but I went ANYWAY.

I arrived in Gila Bend about two hours after leaving. There's a "flying saucer" restaurant there that I've 'photoed' before, but across the road some sculptures I had NOT.

I saddled-up, and headed E to a turn-off to have my lunch (bagel and an orange).

That's a 'gun-sight' pass just visible behind BIG RED, and here's a close-up

then another gratuitous Versys pic.

TWO hours later I arrived back at my house having ridden 183.7 (UNEVENTFUL!!!) miles, and wondering WHY I had ridden there....

I started thinking of this day's ride as the 'Alpha'.

and NOW for the OMEGA ride (Tuesday, 08 Jan)!

Yesterday's ride was such a NON EVENT that I decided to go for another, but this time ramp it UP a bit by heading to Globe, then N on AZ 188 to the "Young Road", AZ 288.

I KNEW I'd find lots of twisties, plus the altitude goes from about 1,400' ASL at home to around 6,500' ASL at the spot where AZ 288 becomes a dirt (mud?) road, and you don't need to spend TOO MUCH time going straight, so I just concentrated on enjoying the ride while keeping a good look-out for frost and snow in the shaded areas.

Up to Globe on AZ 60, then turned N onto 188, and then E onto 288.

THIS is more like it!

And now we're climbing - YAY!

But w/ altitude the temperature DROPS, so now I was seeing snow and keeping a 'conservative line', especially thru the right-turns where the shade covered the road.

My heated jacket liner was set on MEDIUM heat, my heated grips MEDIUM too, so I was alright...!

I got to the highest part where pavement turns to dirt (MUD!) for the rest of the way to Young, about 6,500' ASL - but I FORGOT to cross-check w/ my GPS..., so I can't confirm the altitude,

and then, another gratuitous pic of BIG RED

then I turned around, heading down the hill to a good spot for lunch.

Looks like a great ride. Do you ever have problems with Big Red after coming back from your time in Canada?

Great 2nd ride! That looked to be a nice adventure. If you get the urge to head North. Shoot me a note. I would be happy to meet you somewhere and ride. Thanks for sharing. I guess I should say I am a weekend warrior on the bike. Retirement is a ways off for me.

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

losing altitude...

It looks a little 'grim', but I was warm..., and lunch was ONLY minutes away!

That is Roosevelt Lake in the distance

and the "Rainbow Bridge".

The turn-off for lunch was just ahead, so I pulled over, looking for a secure spot for my sidestand (turned out to be a flatish rock).

My snack 'done' I plugged the heated-gear back IN, selected 1st gear, then headed down.

That's the "Four Peaks" across the way (I'd ridden UP and OVER it a couple of times in other years),

and some really pretty scenery

which includes some Saguaro cacti now that we're lower

this one also w/ a small raptor (sparrow hawk?) on its peak.

The road is very twisty here, pointing towards Roosevelt Lake

and MORE Saguaros,

and including this "Crowned" or "Crested" Saguaro

then an old bridge crossing the Salt River, now getting close to the intersection w/ AZ 188

then heading S towards Globe. Along the way there's a 'hill' w/ what COULD BE a spot for cliff dwellings, so I took a pic - but apparently NOT.

And from there I headed W on AZ 60, then S on AZ 79, and home, four and a half hours after setting out, arriving after 184.5 miles, .8 of a mile longer that Day 1 - the Alpha ride - but proving that the Omega is the ONE!!!

Nope - I always put it UP on jack-stands, the battery removed and in the house on a tray (in case it leaks) w/ a 'float-charger' set to come ON for 15 minutes each 24 hours, the gas-tank FULL, including some Stabil in it, and a dust-cover over the bike.

What is it about Arizona that attracts those artsy dingbats? Did they all come from San Francisco or something?

Well, I had to break out the snowblower today here in Chase to eliminate 6" of snow from the driveway and sidewalk. I sure loved your ride reports, it gives me hope for an early Spring!

Some of the terrain here in the Thompson-Nicola reminds me a little of the deserts.

Ed, thanks for the preview. We plan on hanging out for a few days near Superior, on the way out if weather cooperates.

Awesome country picture. Despite all the development in the world , the place looks just the same from Cowboy movies which i saw as a kid.
Thanks for sharing a beautiful ride.

Thanks for the ride report Eddie, I'm looking forward to riding in Az. in a month or two (sometime before spring). I want to do some of the National Parks in eastern Utah and just haven't decided whether to go south or west first and then make a loop.

I tend NOT to ride weekends, mainly because THAT is when the "squids" come out, and I expect that is WHEN you ride.

Now-and-then I ride up your way - Bagdad, Skull Valley, Prescott, Stanton, Wickenburg, then home via Gila Bend, but it makes for a LO-O-O-NG day.

I think some 'locals' have decided that they MIGHT be able to 'convince' the Californians to 'part' w/ some $$$.

There's one in E UT called "Bear Ears Park" or something similar. I'd LOVE to explore that one sometime.

IMHO - the WHOLE state should be a national park!!!

Yeah, I did the west side in the winter of 14-15 (Zion, Bryce Canyon, North Rim and several state parks). Need to do Monument Valley, The Arches, and what ever else looks good.
