3 days in New Zealand

Left home monday, easy 200km to Taumaranui.from Te Kuiti to Taumarunui 70 km of very good hilly twisty road.FromTaumaranui went on the Forgotten World Highway to Stratford.Only 160km but all hilly and twisty all 2nd 3rd and 4th gear stuff, gives the gearbox and brakes a workout.Just out of Taumaunui I see big black clouds so stop and put on wet weather gear.2mins later rain,,then it bucket down, the heaviest rain ihave ever riden in.Ican barely see with my visor all beaded up and the pouring rain.Im riding uphill and the road is like a creek water coming off the side of the hill dragging gravel and leaves over the road.Stopping is not an option nowhere to stop or turn around ,keep going. Is this adventure riding? After 20 mins im wet through but now its only heavy rain what a relief.Keep dodging rocks washed onto the road and get to the Tangirakau gorge.10 kms of mud,get through quikly.Stop and check bike .what a mess covered in mud.Carry on to Whangamomana where its dry.Stop and have a beer at the pub for old times sake, havent been there for 35 years.Sill got 70 kms to go back on the road.Raining again all the way to Stratford where of course its cold.Get a motel and into a hot shower and try to dry out gear,Bike ran flawlessly and Metzeler z8s good on all surfaces.
Day 2 rode various roads around Taranaki all easy top gear stuff, dull after yesterdays ride.End up in Wanganui.
Day 3 weather forecast bad everywhere heavy rain everywhere except heading home.Ill go that way,its 400km home but ill take some side roads.Head out to Turakina and take back road back to Wananui.good road,no traffic.Head north from Wananui up highway 4 through the Paraparas,a very good bike road.Lots of hills and twistys.Turn off there halfway up to go over Fields Track,a road Ive wanted to do for a long time. The first 20 km rough the next 20 very good.Stop at Ohakune then go up to Turoa skifield for a side trip.Back onto main roads heading home, good riding all the way to Te Kuiti, then back to dull roads for 120kms home.Beat the rain by 1 hour. All up 550kms on the day, about all my knees and hips can take.

@68 my memory isn't as good as at 34, pictures really help, and when that doesn't work, a ride like what Eddie posts c/w photo's or a video by Joe really puts a smile on my face.

Awesome! Wife and I have ambitions to ride New Zealand in a couple years. Have done some preliminary looking but no real plans yet. Was eager to read your post.

I'm just amazed that you can spell, and probably pronounce the names of the towns. Best to you!

I can help with best roads, best scenery ,best beaches etc.The distances are not great, sometimes 350km is a long way here, that can take 4-5 hours, maybe more with photo stops etc.To ride the bets bits its all back roads,no highway cruising.Last wednesday i did 550km in 7hrs and was really hauling the last 150km.I couldnt use highway pegs, shifting gear or the brakes a lot.

My youngest resides outside of Christchurch. I will hopefully get there in the next couple years and will have to add some time on my trip for a rental and ride around the countryside.

From CHCH go north taking the inland route to Kaikoura, see some earthquake damage. Then up around the top of the South Island taking the Queen Charlotte drive to Nelson. Then over Takaka hill,an amazing road to Golden Bay.You have to come back over it then down the Buller to Westport. From there down to Greymouth then over Arthurs Pass and back to CHCH.THats about 3 good days of fun.
