Finally No Smoke

A delightful smoke free morning ride yesterday. The recent forest fires have put a damper on outdoor activity this summer, especially up in the Sierra's. Combined with 2 months of triple digit heat and the little V has been relegated to hanger queen status.

Did a close to home 120 mile loop. Took the back way up to Huntington Lake, where all the pics were taken. 7000 foot elevation brought crystal clear azure blue sky's and temps in the mid 70's.

The pics include shots from the dam, above the lake, and a very interesting cabin that was build at the turn of the century. We actually got to stay in it a few times back when my kids were still at home. Basically a one room plus kitchen setup. Very rustic. The original owner built it so the front would open up where he would sell his wares.

Life is good.

Nice. You've been exporting all that smoke to us here, too. Plus all the other fires contributing to some terrible air quality. I've not been out to exercise for 3 weeks now. No scenic rides or camping either.

The water level looks nice and high in Huntington Lake.

Until yesterday that's how it's been here. No blue to the sky at all, with an eerie pink glow all day long.

i feel bad for you guys regarding the fires. it can't all be natural causes. all the same, ya'll live in lovely country. i've got to ride 800 miles to get to the closest mountain forest from where i live. we used to have problems in deep south texas with the southerly winds in may and june bringing up tons of smoke from the the seasonal primitive slash and burn agriculture in mexico and central america. not so much in recent years. maybe they moved to california?

On clear days I can see 100km+ from my porch. Visibility is +-1km right now in the Okanagan. I worked today and it never got bright enough to turn the photocell lights off at my work.... Ugh.

This morning I'd estimate the visibility (vis...) as 1/4 mile here, but right NOW it's improved to about 1/2 to 3/4 mile.

To put that into perspective - a Cat 1 instrument approach at MOST locations requires 1/2 mile or better vis, to land AFTER an instrument approach, say an ILS....

The REAL issue right now is that NONE of the fire-fighting a/c can operate in vis as low as we have, meaning - WHO knows WHEN it'll end...!

Smoke here in the Jemez Mountains as well from fires way to the west of us. I remember once when we had smoke coming up all the way from the Mexico City area. It is amazing how big a mess a whole bunch of smoke can cause. The volume of the troposphere is not as big as it seems.
