Death Valley... or BUST!!!

Every year when I get down to AZ for the winter, I schedule a LONG(ish) ride to somewhere special for soon after I arrive so there's little chance of getting into snow anywhere. Several years ago my friend Bill (the "Thermo-Bob" creator) did a Death Valley ride, and it intrigued me, so - this year - Death Valley was gonna be IT!

We arrived in the 'Valley of the Sun' on Monday the 15th of October, and I started watching the weather reports on Fox 10, PARTICULARLY the stuff happening in central to northern California. Despite a storm moving through and dumping several feet of snow in the high Sierras, it looked like DV (Death Valley... ) was gonna get missed, so my plan started working towards a departure from the Phoenix area on Tuesday the 23rd.

Had "BIG RED" loaded up (including a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress) Monday night, and Tuesday I was ready to 'rock-and-roll' by 8AM. My wife kissed me goodbye, and I set off for 'the Promised Land', starting with Gila Bend on I-8, then north on SR 85 to join I-10 east of Phoenix, thus (I HOPED...) missing rush hour traffic congestion.

It WORKED, and soon I was on I-10 headed west. The main reason for heading west, rather than NE via Kingman, was to see Parker, Havasu City, Bullhead City, AZ and then continue by Vegas enroute to Pahrump, NV to spend the night.

I left I-10 on a 45 degree angle NW on to Salome, a left turn on 60 to Hope then back NW on 72 to Parker on the Colorado River - VERY pretty. Then N on 95 through Lake Havasu City where I found a photo "op" for the V with London Bridge in the background, but wasn't particularly impressed with the city.

Back onto 95 till I-40, west a bit and N again, this time on SR10 and 155 via Bullhead City, E on 68 and N again on 93 to just west of the Hoover Dam where I transitioned onto various Interstates, then exited 'Vegas onto 160 to Pahrump. By this time (4 PM-ish...), the temp was dropping, a headwind was increasing, and I just wanted to get to a WARM hotel room , so more throttle was 'called-up', and soon I was running 85 mph into a stiff headwind, steadily getting colder (my 12V heated jacket liner STILL in my saddlebag...!).

I arrived in Pahrump just as sundown was coming, got a room and unloaded the V. A supper of fried chicken washed down with several beers and I was ready to hit the sack.

The day had run 501 miles with a gas mileage of low-30s for the Vegas-Pahrump run, so I was wondering if I might have reasonable mileage for the trip, or if that was "out-the-window"....

We just did a 3 day ride from Monterey CA to Lone Pine via 190 to Sherman Pass and out 395 up to Lone Pine for day 1. The next day we did all the back roads out and back. Including Mt. Whitney. Then out up and over Monitor Pass to 88 and back to 4, 26, and all the back roads we could link together.

I added heated Grips to the V for this trip. Worked like a charm too

DV Day 2 (24 Oct) - to Stovepipe Wells

Got up early in Pahrump, showered and shaved, then over to the breakfast buffet (Best Western) which was reasonably extensive, the coffee good. Chatted with some shooters there for a "Gunsite" course, then loaded up BIG RED and filled up at the gas station nearest to the turn onto NV 372/CA 178 to Shoshone (which is where I discovered that last evening's "dash" had given me low-30s gas mileage, making me wonder how I'd fare over the whole trip ).

This morning WAS a tad warmer, and I was treated to seeing how far Nevada can make a highway perfectly straight, then into CA, turning N at Shoshone onto 127 to Death Valley Junction. There I 'wested' onto 190, designated "scenic" which it surely IS, soon passing the Death Valley sign, coming up to the "Dantes View" sign where I turned, starting a 13 mile road (paved!) that ends in a 15% grade to an overlook 5489' above sea level (ASL), facing the Panamint Range - 'Bad Water', lowest elevation in the US about 5700' below - and the salt flats forming a panorama below left to right. On the ride back down the 15% grade I saw a tarantula 'strolling' across so stopped for a picture. 13 miles and back to 190 and west.

Next attraction was the "Twenty Mule Team Canyon" one-way loop where the 'Twenty Mule Team Borax' got its name. Road is dirt, not too gnarly, scenic. Next up is "Zabriskie Point". Took some pics, then chatted with a young fellow from Connecticut who told me he'd reserved his hotel prior to flying west ($150 per night!!! ), and asked about my tenting gear. I told him I'd bought all three pieces - tent, sleeping bag and air-mattress at 'Big5' for around $100, and he could have done the same, then just left them when he headed back to the airport and been $$$ ahead!

A few miles down the road I saw the Furnace Creek Resort (home of the $150 rooms...?), then 190 turns N and past the Furnace Creek 'townsite' to go to Stovepipe Wells. Just before it, 190 turns SW passing the 'Devils Cornfield' - an area with sparsely separated bushes sort of resembling a cornfield - and the 'Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes' which are very close to Stovepipe Wells, backing onto the camping area where I was to spend the next couple of nights.

Still pretty early, so the "Mosaic Canyon" sign beckoned, and another few miles of pretty gnarly, rocky-dirt road took me S to a parking area with a sign telling me that it was another 2 1/2 mile hike to that canyon. Having only riding boots that was 'out', so back down dirt to 190, and 8 miles SW to Emigrant. There I did a 180, back to Stovepipe Wells for a tent site and some cold beer from the General Store there.

Once the tent was up and ready, the desert beckoned, so beer in hand I went for a stroll. Nice. Then, another beer later, I headed over to check out the saloon and restaurant where I had a $30 steak dinner . This day had added 174 miles onto the odometer, a nice EASY day.

Watch for TWO more days in and around DV, coming SOON!

That is a great ride report and pics! I got to do it a few years back in July. I was so worried about the heat that I got up at 4:00 am from Lone Pine headed toward Vegas across the Valley. I did'nt realize how cold the desert gets. I froze until about 9:00 am and then the heat began. I remember Furnace Creek, The Devils Soup Bowl and that long stretch of lonsome road. Great memories!

DV Day 3 (25 Oct)

The night had been reasonably mild, the tent, bag and mattress had all done their jobs, and 6AM saw me getting 'prepped' for a fairly big day. There's a dirt road, one-way going west, through Titus Canyon, which was calling to me, so onto my trusty V and east past the Sand Dunes and Cornfield again on 190, then SE to the "Beatty Cutoff" where the road runs N to intercept 374 to Beatty via Daylight Pass, the entrance to the Titus Canyon Road and Rhyolite (a ghost town) which ALSO called to me. Neat place, and there's a museum with some VERY funky sculptures that look like ghosts in various poses (check out the one with the mustang bike).

A few miles more and into Beatty, NV which has a "Dennys". There I had breakfast asking the cashier to plug-in my camera battery-charger while I dined. Several cups of coffee later, their breakfast Grand-Slam under my belt, my battery retrieved, it was time to fill up the tank ($3.84/gal.) and turn back for Titus Canyon and Red Pass.

An SUV passed me about a mile into the dirt, so I stopped for a photo-op to let the dust settle, then continued. While rocky, very little was deep gravel so my V was happy as was I, though MOST of its 27 miles was spent standing on the 'pegs, and I passed two Jeeps that were camped beside me at Stovepipe Wells.

Back to pavement and NW to Scotty's Castle, built in the 1920s. At a spring there, Scotty had built his "Castle", inviting friends to vacation, and spinning tall tales of his DV gold mines. Electricity is supplied by hydro-electric powered by a 200 gallon/ MINUTE spring, and the house cooled by a wall with water flowing down it. Next I wanted to see the "Racetrack" (that place where rocks leave tracks as they are blown about when the ground is wet and slimy), so leaving Scotty's I crossed to the Ubehebe Crater (formed by a volcanic explosion 2,000 years ago), had a look there, then the 'dirt' road....

It is black volcanic 'pebbles' that felt like ball-bearings. Despite standing on the 'pegs, BIG RED was all over the place, the front trying to 'tuck-under', and I was close to dropping it. I hoped that the road would 'harden-up' like Titus Canyon once I left the volcanic area (about 2 miles), but it TOO was deep gravel, feeling pretty much the same - BAD!!! I gave it another mile, then figured I better get the hell outta there before I crashed, but could NOT get turned on the narrow road, so made a shallow U-turn into the desert. Thank God for the Tourance tires, otherwise I'd probably still be there....

Once back on pavement, my plans awry, I headed back to Stovepipe Wells planning to continue W over Towne Pass to Panamint Springs, check out gas prices ($6.20/gal...), then take Panamint Valley Road south then N on the Wildrose Road, see the Charcoal Kilns, continuing NNW to Emigrant. The dirt to the 'Kilns' was SUPER gnarly, rocky, rutted w/ lots of holes, but generally NOT loose.... Sundown was fast approaching, and the Wildrose/ Emigrant Valley Roads turned out to be great motorcycle roads - paved, REALLY tight'n'twisty, fun, but you had to watch for gravel thrown onto the road in tight turns!

Too soon my tent came into view, and BIG RED was parked. Still needed my camera battery charged so I approached a motorhome with a '73 BMW 750 parked behind. Russ was only too happy to oblige, and leaving him and my battery I headed to the saloon for a $13 hamburger. Returning to Russ' at 7PM for my battery, I was invited in for a chat and soft drink. As we chatted he told me he'd retired 15 months before, and he and his wife loaded up the coach, put the Beemer on a rack on the back (their ONLY vehicle beside the coach) and had been on the road ever since, even telling me how he'd enjoyed some roads near our Kelowna home. This had been a longish day, 268 miles added to the odometer over around 11 hours. My only regret - missing the "Racetrack"....

MORE coming....

DV Day 4 (26 Oct) the Valley - then HOME!

My original plans for this day were to finish seeing what 'needed-to-be-seen', then out to either Pahrump or Vegas, hotel it for the night, then home the NEXT day.

Didn't get quite the rest I'd planned - heavy winds started during the night waking me early. Back to sleep, then I woke to the tent touching my face.... Immediately got up to re-tie the tie-downs, but they were all tight - the winds just forcing the tent over so far that the wall had touched me. Took advantage of being out to empty my bladder, then back inside for a BIT more rest. 6AM, and it was 'camp-breaking' time. I had a bagel in my pack, so breakfast was covered, the bike was loaded, me on its back headed into the sunrise. Again past the Dunes and Cornfield and S on 190 planning morning shadow pics at Zabriskie Point, but several miles S on 190 and highway construction with a half hour wait. Finally got rolling, but the light was mostly gone at Zabriskie Point. Took a few pics then back to Furnace Creek Junction, and S on Badwater Road to see the "lowest point"....

Along the way I turned into "Artists Drive", passing "Artists Palette" expecting colors like we get here in AZ, or up in UT. Not to be - NICE one-way road, but nothing spectacular, then S again passing the "Devils Golf Course" enroute to "Badwater". I've had my GPS on 'compass' for the last few days to get height ASL (or below...), and found that it said -213' (I'd actually seen -250' a few miles north... ) while I photoed the sign up the rock wall saying "SEA LEVEL" at Badwater. COOL nonetheless, tho' I wonder WHERE it IS -285'!

S again and around the corner, and too soon I was heading E towards Shoshone. It was still early, so I set Vegas into the GPS destination, surprised to see an ETA around 1PM. Then I told it to "take me home", and it ETA'd 5:45PM - sunset.

That became my new plan, and the bike began climbing Salsberry Pass (3315' ASL), the temp dropping. Glad to have my Tourmaster Synergy jacket liner on all morning, I now turned it ON, eventually notching it up to HI as the temps dropped.

In Pahrump I had my first coffee of the day, along w/ a '$1 Menu' burger at McDees, then back on the 160 to Vegas. I was in sight of the I-215 loop there when everything ground to a halt for road-paving. A REALLY FUN half hour was spent there, 50 yards from the exit, while huge machines rolled out the asphalt. Still needed the heat ON, and soon I was going E, past the Dam, my ETA home now working towards 7PM.

The cool temps lasted till an hour S of Kingman, AZ when I could finally turn the liner OFF. I neared Loop 303 on AZ 60 (my plan...) only to see a sign indicating it was closed at...some...point, 60 to 101S being the alternate. I filled up along 60 (later worked out my mileage for the WHOLE trip at 51.6 mpg, which is GREAT after factoring in that I got 32 mpg between Vegas and Pahrump on day ONE!), but kept watching my ETA home go later, and later, as I stopped every few hundred yards for ANOTHER traffic light !

Finally got onto Loop 101, then I-10, then MY exit... and home at 7:30, a 12 and a half hour day....

This day's ride was 558 miles, while my GPS said I'd done 1,501 miles since leaving on Tuesday the 23rd. Here are some more pics - HOPE you like them, and my little ride-report.
