River Kwai @ Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Feb 2012.

hello all,

some photos to share on our recent ride to Kanchanaburi, Thailand, visiting the Bridge over the River Kwai, War Museum and Tiger Temple. It was an easy ten day trip covering 3000 km. The roads in Thailand are very good. Usually two or three lane toll free highways in each direction, separated by a tree lined shallow ditch. Cost of 95 Ron petrol is twice that in Msia (RM4 against RM1.90 per litre). An enjoyable ride to visit an historical WWII site. So much is owed by so many to so few. We Remember.

Burma Railway : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma_Railway

Tiger Temple : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Temple

Mini Stats :

1. Total Distance Covered : 3169 km (1970 miles) over ten days.

2. Towns Visited (Thailand) : Hatyai, Chumphon, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin, Surat Thani.

3. Fuel Consumed (2008 Versys) : 132.56 Litres (35.02 US gallons).

4. Average Fuel Consumption : 23.91 km/L (56.24 miles/US gallon).

5. Motorcycles : Kawasaki Versys (2008), Kawasaki D-Tracker 250 cc (2011) and Kawasaki Vulcan 500 (1995).

6. Equipment : Garmin Nuvi 500, Yaesu FT270R walkie talkies with PTT head sets for bike to bike communication.

Can't wait to see pics. I lived in Thailand for awhile and it seems like it would be a lovely place to tour on a Versys!

buffamazon,

yes, touring Thailand on the Versys is ideal. one does not need a sports bike 'cos it is an unhurried adventure, nor a serious dual purpose bike, for the roads leading to all the big towns/cities are well paved. in fact even a humble 250 cc bike did the trip but at the expense of seat comfort. riding at about 120 kph (75 mph) is more than adequate to make good journey times, n yet enjoy the scenery. the PTT petrol stations along the highways have cosy outlets called Cafe Amazon serving excellent coffee n snacks with free WiFi. there are many Bike Weeks held throughout the year with the Phuket Bike Week in early April the wildest biker event this side of Daytona !. ride here n you will know why Thailand is called the Land of A Thousand Smiles. Sawadeeka !.

stlee/kiwi/fastoman, the ride was a last minute trip with my brother n kumar. taking advantage of the drier weather post monsoon n the weeks of inactivity during the lunar new year holidays, we decided to chase the wind n head north up the isthmus of kra towards Kanchanaburi.

the photos are self explanatory. Hua Hin is the royal seaside resort with a quaint fishing jetty, plenty of pubs along the sea front n endless streets with BBQ sea food.

will post more photos later.

slowrain,

odo reading 47200 km (29330 miles).
just about halfway towards 100k km mark.
bike purchased new in June, 2008.
running on second set of tyres (OEM Dunlops changed at 20k km, then switched to Michelin PR2 and these are only half way through the threads).
engine as good as the day it left the show room floor.

Hi Francis, I'm Lam from Ipoh, you helped me with the black V I bought fromTTDI in Oct 2011 through karu Having a great time with it, find it very suited for my height. Love your post and pictures. Ought to do a longer trip with it now that I've used the bike a couple of months, mainly short rides and to Penang and KL.

Wishing you all the best and see you one of these days. I'll post some pics of my bike later.
