Took the new Versys out yesterday with some friends and did a 200 mile ride. Had to take it easy as the trip started in my first 500 miles on this bike so I was keeping it under 5,000 rpm.
Still was able to do 70 mph though.
My friends and I went from Superior, a small mining town 40 miles east of Phoenix and took a quaint, winding two-lane highway south to another small mining town called Winkelman. There we ate some great Mexican food and continued on to Miami (that's Miami, AZ), which is, you guessed it, a small mining town. From Miami we continued on small, good highways with easy rolling twists and turns through the beautiful Arizona desert. It was 68 degrees out and wind was calm. PERFECT! Before we headed back around to make the final portion of our loop complete, we stopped off in a dirt lot with some great little hills to play on!
My friends were riding a KLR 650, a V-Strom 1000 and another Versys (a red '08). All and all, it was a great first ride for me and I can't wait to do it again! The V handled exceptionally and was a blast to ride. I was super comfortable and am now looking forward to longer rides, eventually resulting in multi-day trips! Some day, I'm dreaming of running Mexico to Canada on the V!
