Holy Smokes! I had to read the title twice! Good luck on your adventure Eddie. If your route takes you by my door, it'll be open.

Just drove in car from Ottawa to Moncton and then back again this last week. 1149km one way, we did it non stop. So many great sights to see and so many tourists on the road, particularly in New Brunswick and Quebec City mainly from New England states. Hope you have a great trip and safe travels. Saw many, many bikes in our travels but no Versys.

Suggest bypassing Montreal on the new Rte. 30 if you hit the city during business hours as traffic is brutal.

Opting for Renous Hwy (Rte 8/108) thru Northern New Brunswick is interesting diversion from 4 lane and cuts distance too with a more direct but twisty route. Only issue is fill up with gas at start of highway in Plaster Rock or Miramichi as access to gas mid route is non existent.

I heard there is a lot of construction going on the Cabot trail right now. FastEddie should enjoy that!

Well - I'm BACK!

Trip took 25 days, covered 13,950 kms (8,668 miles), and here are a few "observations"....

The Gen 3 650s w/ their 'closed-loop' FI give EXCEPTIONAL fuel mileage! I AVERAGED about 73.1 mpgImperial (58.5 mpgUS) for the trip - FINAL figures when I do my final gas fill-up - I check mileage at EACH fill, and got as high as 86 mpgImp - and I managed the trip on a NEW set of ContiMotions installed several days before I left, altho' the rear IS flat-spotted (a 'bit'......). Took me most of a day to wash it yesterday, as I do NOT wash it while 'tripping' unless it gets muddy which it didn't, as well as the chain gets its 'ration' of WD40 at least twice each riding day, so the rear of the bike needs a LITTLE extra work to clean.

I had MANY 11 hour days on the STOCK seat, front raised 9/16", and my butt is just FINE, thank you. - -

I re-installed the OEM windshield for the trip (instead of my Puig 5999), set at its HIGHEST setting, and it was PERFECT. NO buffeting, or excessive noise (earplugs, ALWAYS!), and the coverage during rain (there was LOTS... - -!) was really good, so I don't know why so many of you seem to hate it. BTW - I'm about 5'9 1/2", 31" inseam 175# before dressing. My helmet has bugs above the visor, and almost NONE below, but of course I got quite a few onto the shield (which I kept clean w/ the "No-Name brand" of lemon pledge... - ...).

I'm still going thru my pictures, so I'll continue w/ this once I have them all. BTW - as a result of the 'changes' at PHOTOBUCKET I will NOT be using them, so my pics will come via the "drag-and-drop" file upload. I AM a 'dues-paying' user of PHOTOBUCKET, and their announcement indicates that I should have "full-service" until my next billing-date, but - NO GO, so I apologize for all my pics disappearing....

Day 1 - 16July - home to Rocky Mountain House, AB

I loaded the GREEN HORNET TOO the night before, and my 'plan' was to ride into Jasper National Park, camping near the Columbia Icefields, as long as the Rogers Pass area was still OPEN, considering all the forest fires in BC, plus the lightning that'd been forecast for the overnight period, there.

Woke early, had breakfast, kissed my wife,

then headed N to the Trans Canada Hwy, then E towards the Rogers Pass. Skies were cloudy, but I was on the road by 6AM, soon approaching Rogers Pass. It basically goes E-W, then cuts to N, and at that point I could see new fires starting high up the mountain E of me,

and as I followed to the N I could see LOTS of smoke - a major fire had started W of the TCan, just around that curve.

Just a few miles E of Golden I would see another very small plume of smoke high up another 'hill', but a helicopter flew over so I felt no need to report it.

Continued into the Rockies where I took a pic near Field,

rolled into Lake Louise for gas, then turned N onto the "Icefields Parkway". Initially the sky was clear near Bow Summit,

but it began 'clouding over' (or was it fire smoke...? anyway - 2 more pics...), a few drops prompting me to get my rain-gear ON.

SOON it was raining so hard that the mountains were no longer visible, so I decided to turn E at Saskatchewan River Crossing and TRY to get out of the rain, but it took till Nordeg to get out of rain. My plans had been to visit my sister a few hours E of Jasper the NEXT day, so I pulled into a campground just W of Rocky Mountain House, GLAD to be able to dry myself and my gear.... (Turned out that my rain-gear which had worked FINE last year on the D2D ride, had gone PAST its "best-before-date".) - -

Day 2 - 17 July - visiting family not far from Rocky Mountain House.

As I was pretty "beat" when I pulled into the campground last night, I went to bed 'early', then got up 'early', took my time breaking camp because my GPS was showing an estimate to my sister's home of 'noonish'. Couldn't quite figure HOW it came up w/ THAT estimate, and then realized that instead of setting my clocks BACK an hour I'd set them FORWARD.......!

It began to rain as I was packing the bike, so ON w/ my rain-gear, then I headed N. Had to get gas, so I pulled into the first set of pumps I saw, but as there was NO cover over the pumps I could only put in a minimal amount to avoid adding a LOT of rain at the same time...!

I finally found her place, pulled into the drive as the garage door opened, so I was able to 'dry' everything out. Had a very nice family visit (and a chilled beer or two......), on a VERY short day of 154.7 kms in 3 hrs 30 mins.

Day 3 - 18 July - to Foam Lake, SK (NW of Yorkton)

The morning sky had ONLY the occasional clouds, so I was 'on the road' at 0640 after a great home-cooked breakfast w/ my sister and brother-in-law, then N and E to the Anthony Henday by-pass around Edmonton - SWEET!

- a constant 100 kms/hr then onward (this is the "Yellowhead Hwy" named for a Metis trapper named Tete Jaune way-back-when) to the Saskatchewan Border

in the middle of Lloydminster, AB AND SK!

LOTS of canola fields,

but I was running thru showers, so my "failing" rain-gear was ON, for what little protection it could give, then I passed one of the massive potash mines that Saskatchewan is famous for (that large pinkish pile beside that massive building!),

then pulled into a campground at Foam Lake, set-up my tent,

then started the chili to heating while enjoying a 'bit' of "bourbon and branch"....

Today had covered 848.2 kms in 10 hrs 25 mins.

GOOD day!

Day 4 - 19 July - to Kenora, ON

I awakened to the sounds of a train coming THRU the campground, blowing its horn, or AT LEAST that is what it sounded like.

Time to get up, I guess - OOPS! - blew it AGAIN by setting the latest time change the WRONG way again......! BUT - I got a nice pic of the EARLY morning skies....

Hit the road after my usual breakfast of 'cup-a-noodles' and two cups of instant coffee, by 0815, stopping in Yorkton to re-provision and fill-up w/ gas, then saw this nice Ukrainian church just before the Manitoba Border.

The whole wheat-country in Western Canada attracted a lot of Ukrainian and other Eastern European immigrants, so churches like this one are found frequently.

Took another ...Welcome to... pic as I entered MB,

early on looking similar to SK, but then it flattened out....

I found a motorcycle shop just E of Portage La Prairie where I was able to replace my rain-gear w/ a set that actually WORKED!!! , then took the 'Perimeter Hwy' around Winnipeg, tho' it had several traffic lights rather than clover-leafs, leading me to WONDER IF they were running out of $$$ when they built it, but MB turned into forested just prior to the Ontario Border.

It's amazing - the sign said "WELCOME TO ONTARIO",

then gave a list of traffic fines for speeding (up to a $50,000 fine at 50 KMS OVER w/ vehicle impounded to boot), and, DESPITE the best roads thus far - a speed LIMIT of 90 kms/hr...? I was intimidated, so I tried to ride at 90, but a succession of vehicles up to large trucks tail-gating me VERY closely convinced me to "turn-up-the-wick", and I found that the speeds in the high-90s gave reasonable following spaces.

I found a campground at the E end, set camp, then rode back to get a pic of "Husky, the Muskie" in the middle of town, Kenora being on Lake of the Woods, prime muskie territory!

Today had added another 822 kms in 11 hrs to my total.

As always, spectacular photos and interesting, well-written narrative. I've two observations having seen this "first day on the road post." One: you must have a VERY understanding wife. Two: Someone stuck a motorcycle onto your gigantic dry bag!

Think THAT's BIG...? Rode w/ a larger red one a few trips back, but I much prefer the smaller one. Did it by buying a smaller air-mattress....

Day 5 - 20 July - Kenora to Rossport, ON (just E of Nipigon)

Once AGAIN I miss-set my clock by the hour it should have been set FORWARD...!

Had a good restful night, getting underway at 0930 (WHICH "time-zone"???...), but there was MASSIVE road work on the TCan Hwy till Dryden, then it was merely a "now-and-then" issue.

Saw my ONLY set of moose on this 'leg' - a cow and calf crossed a few hundred yards in front of me - altho' during the REST of the ride thru ON, QC, NS and NB I saw MANY very large bloodstains on the road which I'm pretty sure were the result of someone hitting one! There are MANY signs saying that moose are a night-time danger, so watch out...!

As I was coming into the Thunder Bay region, getting low on gas, I planned a stop at a PetroCan station that my GPS was directing me to. Trouble was - it's a "card-lock" station - and then my GPS led me on a 'merry chase' to another station, but when I got to the location there was NOTHING...!

I carry a few litres of gasoline (for my stove), so I pulled over and put them into the tank, then found a REAL gas station a few more kms ahead of that place.

Just up the hwy N from Thunder Bay is the memorial to Terry Fox, an inspirational man who, after losing his leg to cancer, started his "Marathon of Hope" in Newfoundland, whereby he ran a MARATHON every day till he finally couldn't, at this spot, then was taken to hospital where he died. An incredibly courageous man!

Out in the bay is a rock formation called the "Sleeping Giant" which you can see in this pic.

From there I continued along the road just above Lake Superior

(it USED to be almost touching the lake along its northern shore, but - PROGRESS - NOW you hardly see the lake at all, but I'm sure the long-distance truck drivers LOVE it...), until I found an Ontario Provincial Park campground at Rossport, purporting to be "on" a lake. Turned into the MO$T expensive tent site of the trip at $36 and change, and, altho' the site-map showed the lake as being beside my site, it WASN'T!

I spent half an hour just getting to where I got those two pics of it. Oh well....

Once the tent was up, and I had a cup of "B'n'B" (bourbon and branch) in my hand, the day looked PDG!

Today had added 664 kms in 9 hrs 45 mins, making the six-day total on my GPS at 3172.0 kms (1971 miles).

Well done! Looks like a great ride and I recognise some of the pics around glacier/Jasper.
I am on my last night of my trip to Alaska and have to say I am exhausted! I am impressed that you are camping! I found that the campsite fees were not far off motel fees. (split 2 ways).
Ride safe and many thanks for taking the time to post. I know how time consuming it is!!!!

Out in the bay is a rock formation called the "Sleeping Giant" which you should be able to see after the pics of the Memorial.

What an amazingly beautiful country you live in. Oh, and when riding back to B.C. I hope you remembered to set your watch BACK an hour at each time zone. Makes for much more interesting time/distance calculations.

HOW can you even SUGGEST that I might not get it right when re-setting my clocks going W...?

HELL - I practiced doing it THAT way while I rode E (just so I wouldn't forget......)!
