Day 5 - 15 June '16 [Dawson City, Yukon]

When I'm NOT on the road (or at least - not riding a LONG distance that day...), I go for a couple of mile walk each morning, and here was no exception.

Woke early, shaved then cooked breakfast, grabbed the camera and headed out, first looking at what had come into the campground last evening. Among others - a Harley trike....

W/ the 'permafrost' here, buildings need to be ABOVE ground, or they'll melt the ground and collapse. Here are a few that are standing pretty well.

My walk had started going S from camp, then W, and now I was along the dike beside the river, the town SLOWLY coming awake....

Last evening a fellow - Glen - from Mississauga (Toronto area) had ridden in on a BMW 650, no place to stick his tent, so we "negotiated" a spot for him just down from where Blair was allowing me to share HIS spot, so, this morning Blair, Glen and I went for a ride up to the Dome which overlooks the area, as well as a bit of a 'tour'.... Glen on the left w/ Blair, and w/ me.

Then we rode back and I moved over a few spaces to the site I was to share w/ a KLR rider, Matt, out of Anchorage, leaving as much space as possible.

When that was done we three walked down to see what was happening at the "D2D HQ". Saw this older Kawi (W650...?) w/ 'locally processed' handguards,

Then 'the Dick' arrived, the fellow that sets ALL this up...! - at the "JJJ Hotel" that 'hosts' all this - and Joe, the fellow I'd met at the Braeburn Lodge while eating that GIANT cinnabun ) or at least - PART OF IT!

Then, as the afternoon progressed, we headed into the JJJ Bar for some Yukon Gold, a GREAT Yukon brew!!!

Day 5 continued...

After a beer (or two......), we went outback to the JJJ courtyard to check out how many riders were there already, then I walked back to my camp.

This is what the sunlight looks like at 1917 hrs in Dawson City, VIRTUALLY at the solstice, w/ the "Moosehide Slide" in the background, Goldrush Campground at the end on the left past the Church!

The three of us sat around our tents chatting till about 2230, then to bed.

Day 6 - 16 June '16 [Dawson City, Yukon]

Yesterday I'd made inquiries, then bought a "phone calling card" at the Post Office (???), so when I got up early this morning - NOT raining, BTW! - I went to the pay phone to call and let my wife know where (and how) I was.... Nice touching bases, then I grabbed the camera and started walking.

I had been to the cemeteries on the route to the Dome, but I found this one along the road to both Jack London's cabin, and that of Robert Service (he wrote "the Cremation of Sam McGee", among others).

Some very interesting current homes in the area (STILL built above ground of course).

I passed a gov't building that had two WW1 cannon, nicely restored, in the front.

There are MANY crows and raven in the north-country, so I took a pic of this one on my way to try a (WELL recommended) jalapeno and cheese scone, HOT out of the ovens at 0730...! VERY tasty....

BTW - "cheechako" means... a person newly arrived in the mining districts of Alaska or northwestern Canada. In other words - a "tenderfoot"....

I was able to continue w/ a "walk-about" the rest of the day (MIGHT have included the JJJ for brewskis......), had supper, then headed back to the courtyard to see WHAT had arrived.

I stopped at the JJJ to find a crotch-rocket wearing knobbies. It's owned by the fellow who made that video of D2D, and here's a link to his video.

(I rode the Top of the World to Chicken in concert w/ him, passing and re-passing each other several times on the 18th.0

By this time a LOT more riders were in evidence in Dawson..., including (I believe) ELEVEN on Versys 650s, Gen 1, 2 and 3!

Day 6 continued...

We were able to get our OFFICIAL D2D tees today, AND tickets for the steak-dinner (on day 7), ALWAYS a stand out, cooked by the Dawson Volunteer Fire Fighters, all proceeds to charity.

Finally got back to the campground to find another green '15 650LT (beezerbob), and had a nice chat about them, then met a few more V riders, including two gals from WA, one on a Gen 1 'green '09, the other on a black Gen 2.

By now the fellow I was sharing my site w/, Matt, had arrived and put up his tent, three of his friends there, talking and having some beers. Turned out that all FOUR are airline pilots in Anchorage, so I had a great time "telling lies" (which we call 'hangar-flying')....

Now to 'rest up' for tomorrow, the BIG "D2D day"....

Appreciate your posts on the D2D. It's almost like being there (minus the rain).

This video by the crotch rocket with knobbies is amazing. Normally, my limited attention sp hey there's a squirrel! What? ... would not allow me to get through a 10 minute ride video, but this guy shot some great footage and put together one great show.

BTW, that would be Alaskajeff's Versys parked and on display at the 7:20 mark in the video. Not sure who is running the green Vs near the end of the show.

Always trust your cape.

Hey Fast Eddie. It looks like we posted our ride reports in the wrong place. Members Rides is supposed to be pictures/descriptions of your motorcycle. We should have been using Group Rides, even though you are riding solo. Anyway, this will put your report back on the main page. I wanted to do that because it is a great story, lots of great pictures and the link to the video the guy shot and then produced is awesome. A near professional job about the very place you were headed. Maybe this way a few more folks will get to take a look.

Forty years away from 2 wheel fun. Sure is great to be back smelling the roses!!!

Day 7 [17 June in Dawson City]

Had my usual early wake-up, phoned my wife, then chatted w/ two Harley guys who were leaving to ride the Dempster on pretty stock looking Harleys, down to the street rubber. SOME H-D guys RIDE!!!

-

On my walk-about I was able to photo a house in the process of being built, which'll give you some idea of how they deal w/ building on 'permafrost' up here....

I knew where Alaska Jeff was planning to stay, so I walked past and, sure enough, his Gen 2 was sitting there.

You can JUST make out the WW1 cannon in the second pic - left of his headlight. Down the road a bit, I saw another Gen 3, this one white, belonging to RDJeff I believe.

Then back to camp to make breakfast and do a load of laundry which I'm HAPPY to report, I was able to DRY by putting stuff ONTO my tent...!

Walked thru the camp area, seeing more Vs - this Gen 3 greenie belonging to beezerboy (I believe), while the red Gen 1 shared my site LAST year, but I forget his name.

Later, when it was all dry and put away, I chatted w/ Glen and Blair, then we headed down to the JJJ for some beer(s) before the steak dinner. Participants in the 'poker run' received a GREAT tee shirt donated by TWISTED THROTTLE, so mine was folded and put away - still haven't worn it YET....

Day 7 continues....

The steak dinner and speeches were going to be held in the ice-hockey arena (which has TERRIBLE acoustics!), so we finished our JJJ beer and walked over. A silent auction was progressing, so we found seats while Blair "stood us" to beers.

Our table was called to join the 'grub-line', and I took a pic of the auction items (SOME, anyway), before getting my steak and some salads before venturing outside to take a pic of the volunteer firefighters who did yeoman duty cooking!!!

After eating, speeches, and award giving, it was over to the courtyard of the JJJ to see who was there, and prepare for the "motorcycle games".

I saw a Bimmer sporting an interesting 'camo' pattern as well as a Paris-Dacre moose, and I figured a pic was in order....

The games run thru midnight, but I was too tired to hang around, so I was able to meet Alaska Jeff thru the fellow w/ the 'knobbied' crotchrocket (who made that GREAT video), then retreated to my tent by 2135 to rest up for tomorrow's ride to Tok via Chicken, over the Top of the World Hwy. Using ear-plugs I was able to isolate myself from the 'partying noises' later on, and was soon fast asleep....

GREAT D2D Dick!

Day 8 - 18 June '16 [Dawson City, Yukon to Tok, AK]

Slept in till 0630 (...!), grabbed a shower, made brekkie, broke camp, leaving at 0830. Glen and Blair were planning to ride the Dempster - hope they had a good ride...!

As I entered the ferry line I saw I was behind another '15 650LT, a white one. The rider got off, came to me w/ his hand out to shake, said "You're fasteddie!", introducing himself as RDJeff from the forum.

A sight-seeing side-wheeler passed between us and the ferry 'stop' on the W side of the Yukon River.

I was happy to see that it was NOT the 'free-for-all' that it'd been back in 2013, a race to Chicken in effect, so I 'dawdled', taking pics passing and then being passed by a KTM w/ AZ plate I'd chatted w/ at D2D....

This Yukon road (Top-of-the-World Hwy) is about 65% dirt, 35% paved, and where I took these pics probably had a FOUR foot high drift on the road, my first time up here in '04 on my Bandit! The road continued W to the US Border where I took this pic, and then the Customs Officer offered to take one w/ me in it. NICE!

The video fellow on his sportsbike showed up right after me, so I took their pic where mine was taken (for them), then this one of them. That's the sportsbike on the right. He and I passed then re-passed several times enroute to Chicken.

This 'cabin' is a short distance from the Border. Apparently you can buy some "sort of legal herbs" there....

PRETTY country, altho' the road to Chicken is narrow, pot-holed, w/ blind corners!

Day 8 continues...

I pulled in to Chicken for a few pics. This one 'similar' to one I took back in 2013 w/ the 'original' GREEN HORNET. BIT of a difference, isn't there...?

Soon after Chicken the road improves, and I pulled into this pull-out to WD40 my chain, eat lunch, then remove my jacket liner (to cool off!).

Some of the Taylor Hwy is gravel tho' MOST is paved, w/ dips that approach being "whoop-de-doos" as seen on motocross tracks, but seriously scenic.

Day 8 continues...!

THIS on the horizon....

I pulled in to the "Fast Eddys" restaurant only to find that they NO LONGER have tent-sites, so rode a quarter mile further W to an RV campground that did, and 'rented' this site at $21US/ night.

Once my tent was up, I walked over to Fast Eddys for lunch, a prime-rib sandwich w/ fries for $12.95, and was joined by a fellow from WV riding a '95 BMW RT, working his way back to home. We had a great chat, then he saddled-up and left, while I picked up a couple of LARGE (???) Fosters beer at the package store next door, and a 1.5 quart bucket of chocolate ice cream (didn't have smaller sizes). My plan was to enjoy as much of the ice cream as I could, then put the rest in the garbage, but two BMWs from Alberta had set-up close to my site. I hollered over - "Want some free ice cream? Bring over a cup or somethin', and a spoon...", which they did. I divvied up the dessert, we all enjoyed it, chatting about D2D, and I took a pic of one of their decals before heading back to my site....

This day had been PDG - warm (HOT even!) - NOT wet, and reasonably short, about 330 kms (205 miles) in a total of 5.5 hours.

Wondered what TOMORROW would bring....

Day 9 19 June [Tok to Cantwell via Fairbanks and Denali (?)]

I woke early (0400 AK time = 0500 BC time), took advantage of the 'included' shower, cooked breakfast while breaking camp, then loaded-up and left. It was pretty windy, but, SO FAR, was dry. The FIRST time I'd ridden this road in '04, I hadn't seen Denali for all the rain - had my luck changed...?

I stopped to take pics of what APPEARED to be steam rising off the water, but realized was ACTUALLY dust raised by the wind (later heard it's been 50 knots, GUSTING!)....

I was soon stopped for road construction (but at least it wasn't raining...) - YET...! - then continued W, the sky raising concerns. Is that a storm, OR an eruption...?

MORE dust as I crossed the Richardson River. The bike was 'moving around', but not TOO much (), and I was soon stopped at the End of the Alaska Hwy, Delta Junction.

Day 9 continues...

From there W toward Fairbanks, I was getting the idea that my future would include "moisture".... Pretty views, tho'....

I pulled off to oil my chain, seeing evidence that I was in "Indian country"....

I saw this road-side attraction as I neared Denali, and went inside for some directions, as well as these pics.

The clouds were getting thicker, darker, but so far no rain.

That is, till I was abeam Denali (which I couldn't see!) when the sky started into light rain all the way to Cantwell where I got a site and set camp, still blowing strongly altho' my camp site was sheltered.

Today was 358 miles (580 kms) in about 9 hours, and I was soon eating warmed-up chili, washed down w/ some beers I'd bought an hour back N of there.
