Givi top case with actual reflectors!!

I decided to make my top case's red plastic "reflectors" actually function after reading a post here about a guy modding side cases with LEDs (mine isn't that cool). I took some 3M 3150 SOLAS tape that my dad had laying around and lined the chinsy metal sheet that is under the red tinted plastic on the Givi case.

Then, after doing the left side I decided to test it in the dark garage with a tac light. The right was hardly seen and the left lit up quite well; a HUGE difference could be seen. I completed both sides, reassembled and then added a 3 foot strip around the center of the case.

The strip of the 3150 just looks white there, but is has a neat hexagon pattern like the top pic.

I know it isn't a huge change for daytime, but at night I want every chance there is for someone to see me. Where I live, there are no lights on the road for the first 9 miles of my daily commute.

The whole thing took about 30 minutes.

Glad to see I'm not the only one.

On my cases, here's the difference. The top case and right side case had the reflective tape inserted. The one on the left was left stock.

The white band on the top case is the 3M Black reflective tape. As you can see, the stock reflector on the left side case is soooo useful.

And here's all three cases with updated reflectors

If you have the Givi /Kappa cases, it's worth the 20-30 minutes to do this. Why these cases aren't shipped with working reflectors is beyond me. I can't believe that adding $5 of reflective tape (I used silver DOT-C2 tape used for trucks) would add any significant cost to the cases.

I was mad to find out I paid so much for the V46 case and it didnt even have a reflector.....
I plan to do the Admore lighting kit too, just to help out with rear visibility.

Dave, that's the effect I was hoping for... nice pics.

Nice job.

Just note don't always leave the bike in the sun much.
Them tapes become a bit brownish after a long while and are a pain to remove.

Which tapes...the Solas or the 3M black? The stuff on mine has been there for about 3 years, and so far is still black. I can peel it off if I really want to. I just have to stop biting my nails (bad habit) for a bit so that I can get an edge up.

Ditto. At least yours had a piece of somewhat-reflective metal under the reflector. Mine had a piece of white paper.

The cure was also white paper, but it had some bling.

Inspired by mods like this, I added some reflectivity to my Versys's topcase, a SHAD SH46. I used fluoro yellow and non-fluoro red Reflexite V97 and V92, respectively. It's bright in the day and brighter at night.

I don't believe those areas were meant to be reflective by the manufacturer, I think there intent was to make us spend more money and buy the lighting kits like I just did. But I think what you did with that reflective tape is brilliant.

Thanks for the tip, Stlee29. I didn't realize that about the SOLAS tape.

I've used the white Ultratape on bikes for years...it has always stayed white, and is highly reflective.
