grinding the headers

in the area where you normally would have a midpipe, the headers look all cheap and fugly. Looks like they took two pieces of sheet metal, pinched them together with a weld on the edge.

I'm wondering if anyone has taken the time to grind down the lip left over from this process.

This is something I'd like to do to give a cleaner look (since I have a naked versys basically), but I am worried that the weld is not very deep, meaning to grind off the lip would be grinding a narrow slit into the headers.

any experience or input?

I think there's a artistic beauty going on with the V's pipes, but as they're massed produced, you'll always have compromises. I don't think there's any worth in trying to clean up the area you are talking about and I also think you may end up with a split exhaust as you'll take the strength out of that section. And do you think anyone else will notice all your effort ?

Even the aftermarket pipes are no different.

I was at a friends house. He restoring a Honda 305. The WHOLE exhaust system is "Clam Shell" built. Header pipes, mids and mufflers! I remember it looking cheap and ugly sitting next to a Brit Bike...BUT the Honda always started and ran. The Brit Bike...well sometimes not!

AND Davy F you need to ride more! I have DISHES that aren't as clean as your bikes crankcase!

Or was that look THEN leap?
