Can you paint the wheels?

I've noticed on several members bikes that they have a color matched ring around the wheel lip. I have a 2008 red V and was wondering how to change the color of my wheels to black with a red ring? Are the wheels powder coated and then painted?

They sell those colored rings on ebay. They are just a decal.

Powder coating is by and large the best way to paint wheels. The paint is a lot more resistant to chips and scatches. The negative side is that the wheels have to be stripped down to bare metal, and bearings removed, before powder coating can take place. The powder coater also needs to be knowledgeable as a lot of masking needs to take place to insure that the reassembly is as straight forward as possible. Otherwise you'll spend a lot of time chasing threads and removing paint from mating surfaces. The masking material they use is diiferent from the normal masking tape used in wet spraying, it has to be temperature resistant because the paint is usually baked on at 350-375 degrees.

Those are wheel reflector "rim tape". They come in any shade under the rainbow. Check out ebay.

If you want black rims, suggest checking with nearby V owners first, see if someone wants to swap their black for your silver. It's worth a shot. Some like the contrast the silver provides with black tires.

As already mentioned, powder coating is the way to go to change color. But there's some effort involved. And the expense of new bearings and seals. And you'll need paddock stands for the bike to be stable with the wheels off (if you don't already have them).

I had my VFR wheels powder coated, usually about 75 a wheel. Even after all the work, expense, etc, you still have to worry about a mechanic monkey scratching them up when they put new tires on.
