SW Motech Crash Bars

After ordering the Motech crash bars off of Amazon, they arrived a few days later. The bars were heavily bubble-wrapped and arrived with full hardware and some half azzed instructions...no scuffs or damage marks on the bars, though. First impression of the Motechs: beefy, heavy, and high quality(hopefully all the mounting points line up).

I'm willing to do a write up w/pics on the installation if anybody is interested. Also, any advice before installing is greatly appreciated.

I am considering adding these bars too to my 2015 v650. I'd be interested in your installation experience. To what gen versys are you adding these bars?

I used to be Cojacket on the forums now I'm BreckRider!

I added these bars a couple weeks ago to my 2015 650. Everything lined up perfectly and it took me less than 30 minutes to install them.

I actually wanted something that provided more protection for the lower section of the engine but I did not want to use the cover mounting bolt locations to mount the guards. Also, I did not like the fact that it looked like there was a little grinding and custom fitting that had to be done with the bars that mounted lower.

Other than not protecting the lower part of the engine, I am happy with these crash bars. They are definitely high quality and they will offer protection if I drop the bike.

I ride a 2011 Versys so installation may vary slighty when compared to a 2015+. The instructions are manageable but when you consider that the guards are one of the priciest sets out there...actually the instructions are a joke. I'll manage considering I can assemble an aircooled VW engine with my eyes closed.😎

LOL! Then you'll have no problem (though I recommend opening your eyes )

Recently installed these on my '14. Took me longer than trialsbug's 30 minutes, but I spent a lot of time trying to make sense of the (poor) instructions.

My biggest concern was whether I should one bolt at a time, for fear that pulling them all might drop the engine!

Anyway, even with poor directions, the bolts are different sizes (at least on the '14), can only fit one way, so go with your first impression and you'll probably be right. Oh, and the engine didn't fall out

I think your '11 uses the same crash bar - PM me if you do have a question - I'll be happy to compare to my bike and send pics. (I doubt you'll need the help )

I got everything mounted fairly easy but I am getting some nasty vibrations from the enginge guards. I will have to come up with something to combat this...any ideas?

on the 2015+, sw motech's are not crash bars.
they are merely frame sliders.
one crash in the dirt and these bar will dig in and protect nothing.

I think his comments only apply to the 3rd gen crash bars. I have the crash bars on my 2015 650 and they don't look like they would provide the protection that the 1st or 2nd gen bars would provide.

I am going to remove the bars and reinstall them. Hopefully it will eliminate the vibes

Really happy with my SW-Motech crash bars. They protect the bike really well and their extra weight is so low due to their mounting position that it is not noticeable. They've more than paid for themselves in prevented damage to the bike. I have these currently on a Version 2 Versys, and had them installed prior to that on a Version 1 Versys.

Happy to report that after reinstalling the guards(with a helper this time) I was able to eliminate the vibe/buzzing. I mocked everything up and had a second person lightly tighten things up on the right side while I worked on the left. Fairly easy install, and it only took about 15 minutes the 2nd time around. Sturdy feeling bars and the added weight is fairly unnoticeable.

I just installed these on my 2011, 80 mile round trip commute yesterday and didn't notice any harsh vibes. They look great too!

I would suggest that you start by installing the rear lower engine bolt first. I had to drive the bolt in from the right hand side. It would just not go from the left. Which is how it comes from the factory. Leave it loose and then the front one. The clamps can go on last.
