My take on a '15+ rear rack

Was looking around for a rear rack for my 2015 650... didn't much like the offerings from the usual retailers. They either look a little flimsy, or they want an arm and a leg for a couple pieces of angle and a bit of sheet metal punched out by the thousands in china.

Sooooo...
I decided (with a lot of inspiration from KtmDuals and his pre-'15 racks... my hats off to you and your skills sir!) to make one of my own.
I saved a piece of 10mm aluminum plate from the trash bin, it had plenty of dings and scratches but was usable, and I got to work.

Brackets.. cut from some flat stock...

Some shaping and some "speed holes" for a little bit of interest...

Test fitting...

played with some card board... looking for the size and shape...

Used some thin aluminum stock (an old speed limit sign) to be sure I had it right...

Started with the big plate...

Have an old milling machine at work that is great for playing around, but the hard drive has been out for a while, have to do everything by hand right now.
Kind of a challenge...

Had fun with the bends...

Test fitting on the bike...

I have it all clamped up now, braced every way I can manage, hopefully it will hold until its tacked and then welded...

If'n I do it, I gunna git a wippin .... OK! I do it!!!

Something goes here...

That looks like crap.

Send it to me, along with all of the fasteners.
Nice guy that I am, I will properly dispose of it for you.

Yep, some time in my sand blaster to rough it up (and take some of the scratches out) and a few coats of some Semi-flat... maybe some of Summit's "Hot Rod Black" urethane so it closely matches the factory frame paint.
I do have a friend who runs a powdercoating shop, but I like that the hardener activated paints are about as tough, and way easier to touch up! (Not to mention cheaper! - he might be a friend, but I swear he would charge his mother for powdering!)

And... I am keeping all the patterns, as I hope the mill will be fixed soon and I can make a program to cut the plates and brackets out much faster.
Then we will see if I can pop any out.

If'n I do it, I gunna git a wippin .... OK! I do it!!!

Waiting on paint to arrive in the mail... so I started a little extra project to kill some time.

It'll be done and ready by the time the paint gets here.
Now I have to drag the sand blaster out...

If I flip it over, can you figure it out?

I'm trying to build something similar for my tablet, with 2 bars (or a flat surface, with 2 Ls), but I don't have your machining capabilities....

good job with the GPS mount, but especially with the rack!

Very nice job on those! That GPS mount looks very trick!
Nice job following the curve of your case mounting plate too.
Did you paint your pieces?
I painted my GPS thingy with Rustolem Textured Black (I was in a hurry to get it on and use it). I like the look of the Textured stuff, but its not as tough or "nick" resistant as I would like. Definitely can't use it on the rear rack. Probably just paint over the mount (and the windscreen brackets its bolted to) once I get ready to spray some "Hardened" two part paint on the rear rack.

If'n I do it, I gunna git a wippin .... OK! I do it!!!
