Could you share what you learned? Thanks.

Certainly.

DaveC explained in post #4 of this thread exactly what my problem is:
The OEM rack for the V35 side cases is not compatible with a top case rack of either Givi or SW-Motech.
This is the rack with the integrated passenger grab bars (see picture in DaveC's post).

DaveC replaced the OEM rack with the regular Givi PLX447 rack and now it works with the top case rack.

I'm just a little miffed that I would have to spend an additional $150 to replace a fully functional side case rack, just to be able to install a top case rack.

Just to clarify a bit...

If you search, you'll find a few examples of people who have successfully gotten the OEM side racks to work with the Givi/Kappa top rack. However, there are others (such as myself) for which it just didn't work. I don't know why...maybe I'm missing the patience or technical ability, but after a 4 hour struggle trying to get the racks to line up properly, I gave up. Good thing I don't have hair anymore, as I would have pulled it all out.

In my case, I couldn't get the bolt near the grab rails to catch on the theads with the hanger for the top case also in place. A longer bolt didn't help as the angle of the bolt going in wasn't straight, so it would have cross-threaded if it did catch. And everything was hooked together very loosely, so I just couldn't line it up.

Like Pretbek, I was a wee bit upset to find out that I couldn't get it to work. But the combination of the FZ447 top rack and PLX447 side racks works fine. Installed in about 30 minutes.

Were you ever able to sell the OEM rack, or is it still decorating your garage?

I would be a little less hesitant to do a full rack swap if I could recuperate some money by selling the OEM rack.

i thought that the motech (factory) rack was not compatable with the givi racks, but the givi racks were compatable with the givi trunk kt.

The OEM side racks are compatible with the Givi V35 side cases, but are not the same as the PLX447 racks you purchase from Givi. Will they work with the Givi FZ447 top rack? It's a crapshoot. Some people have gotten it to work, some of us haven't.

Still in my garage. I haven't tried to sell it, since I'd be selling the racks by themselves without the bags, and unless the buyer is local, shipping costs could be expensive (if anyone in the Ottawa/Montreal area is looking for a side rack, PM me ). I honestly don't think there's much of a market for them by themselves. Worst case, they'll work as a spare if I ever have an issue with the PLX447 rack. I bought the cases and OEM rack used for the same price as new bags on their own. Overall, I ended up spending about the same amount as I would have if I had bought new. Oh well.

From the sounds of it, you haven't bought the top rack yet (?). If not, about the only thing I can suggest is
- get the FZ447 rack and give it a try. Maybe I'm just technically inept and too quick to open my wallet. Or maybe the Kappa version of the top rack (KZ447, which is what I have) is slightly different from the Givi version. Like I said, others have gotten it to work, so perhaps I'm just unlucky or impatient. If it doesn't work, either return it or see if you can find a buyer for it.
- sell your current setup and go with the proper Givi and/or SW-Motech combination.

Just my $0.02,
