prepping bike for tour

I'm slowly getting my bike ready for a longer, roughly 3000 km trip this next month, and then a much longer one somewhere in March next year.

So I have added, engine guard, trekker panniers (but not topbox, prefer the classic v box), hand guards (mosty tropical riding so have held off getting covers for them), X-creen.

On my wish list:
1. more versatile tyres that can handle a bit more off road but still be good for road. I have the ABS vesion so sizes are limited. I got stuck in some scree the other day up near the volcano, was by myself and it was a bastard getting it back on the tarmac (6 inches up from the scree), stock dunlop tyres are hopeless in sand, gravel, or scree. Any recommendations? I would have to order them in I think.

2. skld/bash plate

3. gps

4. anything else essential you can think of for unsupported trips that would be roughly 80% road 20% 'fire trail' (not really super off road)?

Hi,

About the tires, I rode 21k km with the Anakee2 (150/70-17), rear tire.
Front tire is a problem, unless you want to use a rear tire in front. In this case, you can use the Anakke2 (130/70-17), but you have to lift your front fender. There is threads about this in this forum.
Another thing about tires is: how to solve a flat tire? There is some products that you can put into tire to prevent. You can also bring a repair tire (I have one from Motul), and/or you can have a repair kit, like this:

Don't forget you have to have something to inflate the tire after using this kit.

I am planning to do a long trip soon, so I am installing scottoiler (chain lube) and changing all the final drive.

I keep a Stop & Go plug kit with the CO2 cartridges under my seat.

The repair kit is a good idea, and I do travel with small electric pump which runs of the bike battery.

Not sure if the Annakees are available in Indonesia will check it out.

Quite a few of us use Metzler Tourance in sizes 130/80x17 rear on the front (raise the fender), and 150/70x17 rear.

Bring some Gorilla tape and zip ties. Anything that springs a leak or breaks can usually be fixed with the application of one of both of these, at least well enough to get you into town. If you're going off the beaten path, pack the "10 essentials" and more water than you think you'll need. Plan for an overnight stay in the wilderness. I'd also recommend a 12v air pump, like the Slime one. CO2 cartridges are OK in a pinch, but they're pretty much a one shot deal..

I did a 3000 mile trip the year before last. I added bolt on highway pegs to the crash bars, was glad I had them to change foot position every now and again.

Another option for an air source is a mountain bike hand pump. I carry a skeletonized 12V pump and plug kit on bikes with tubless tires.

I always carry spare plugs and fuses plus other stuff mentioned here. On a long trip you will need to be able to change oil and filter, clean air filter so I carry a filter and appropriate tools. You need to lube chain once a day. You bike tool kit has most of what you need but they are cheap tools. I generally replace them with something of better quality. Air guage.

I have had good luck with Pirelli Scorpion Trail. They last good and have good wet/dry traction plus some off road traction. Nothin' works in the sand. If you get in a situation where the tire are cutting it air them down to 20 psi or so.
