PIAA Horn Upgrade

Hi all- Just upgraded my horn to the PIAA 85112 115db 500HZ + 600HZ Sports Horn. I thought I'd upload some vids in case anyone else is curious how one and both compare to the stocker.

Totally a mission critical upgrade for NYC!

When I installed my PIAA's intended to record them also. But honestly, it seems kind of hard to show the comparison that way, you'd think it would be easy.

But with the 2 piaa's installed there's absolutely no doubt you'll hear a difference. It won't be like maybe it's louder... maybe...

No, you'll have absolutely no doubt whatsoever. They are a major improvement over the oem wimpy thingy.

goat, did you install 1 at the oem position and the other behind the fairing? that's how I did mine and they seem to be working out very well in those positions.

Really like that but is it easy and just use wires from the other horn? Where is best buy on horns? Great mod!

So far as the install goes- I did the first horn as a simple swap out for the stocker. According to the manual the second horn simply splits directly off the 2 wires to the 1st. Pretty straightforward. I was way behind on getting my sw crashbars and zeta handguards on, so I farmed the project out to local shop and had them throw the 2nd horn on. I'll update with a pic tomorrow but it's directly opposite the stock position, so I'm assuming they fabbed up a little tab to connect it with. Not sure.

No, there's no need for a relay with these horns. Some of the people on the FJR forum installed these and when they were tested for draw, it was always right around the exact same amount as the OEM horns.

In addition to that, piaa states specifically, on their website, that these horns do not need a relay.

Now I have to order something else and leave the plastics off a few more days.

I thought I would be done after a I received the waterproof switch for powering my radar detector which sits in a waterproof box (and which, I found out had a voltage display. Escort 9500ix)

had the PIAA/FIAA horn too, and this is what happened after i rode through a thunderstorm last Friday. As of today, it is still the same so i'm gonna ditch it and go for a cheapo dual-tones when i have the time to.

**sorry for the poor video, forgot that i had the lowest video setting on my phone.**

Current : Maroon 2011.
- Fender Extender - Radiator Guard - 19mm Nissin radial master - Nissin 4-pot caliper - SS brake lines - Osram Hyper 65W both low/high beam - LED 30w aux floodlights & 3w DRLs - Rear Hugger - Givi crash guards - Yoshimura TRC Carbon - Dynojet PC5 - Scottoiler - R1 shock with Ohlins 14.2 kg/mm spring - Imitation Givi Windshield - Rear Givi rack with 24ltr Givi top box - Bosch dual tones - Z800 stock mirrors.

Question- Did you have the protective shield on the horn? (more easily seen on the lefthand horn in this pic) I can't quite tell from your video. I've read a lot of people remove that for added volume. If it's not intact I'd imagine the angle would've been allowing for a lot of road spray to make it up into the horn?

There's no such thing as a PIAA/FIAA horn. Looks to me like what you had (have) is a FIAM horn. Completely different.

And they are inexpensive too, 9.79 ea at Amazon. Not to say a PIAA can't go bad... but I've never heard of one doing that...

AzItLies I think you are correct. Very hard to see but it does not look like PIAA horns. Andrewhtf please confirm this. We try to keep all product info accurate and compare apples to apples here! Thank you!

Goat12: i have no idea about the protective shield as it came installed by the previous owner.

AzItLies & MTS : the logo imprinted seems to me as if PIAA/FIAA (cant be sure) but i'll double check and get a clearer photo. Anyway since it is already an effed-up horn i'll need to get it changed. A regular dual-tone Hella or Bosch would do just fine. oh yeah i am thinking of a DIY "shield" to stop the road spray.

although i'm wishing for a Stebel but the price for one is just crazy here in my place.

Hey, no worries. Sorry to hear about it not functioning as it should.

I'm honestly considering, if going on some long trip, bring a couple of baggies. If it starts to rain cover the horns and use a twist tie. But I mean a serious rain, one you'll be riding in for hours.

A few minutes, not gonna bother.

Although, if mine crap out, 45 bucks and a few minutes and they're replaced. But in the 2 years I've been following PIAA horn threads, not heard of one failing...

I just got the PIAA 85114 Slim Line 400Hz + 500Hz Sports Horn Kit from Amazon for $55.23.

I mounted the 400Hz horn in place of the stock horn. I wasn't sure where to mount the other horn and didn't feel like putting it behind the headlight. There was a free 6mm hole to the right of the engine near the top, so I mounted it there and ran wire to tap off the stock horn wires. I didn't have any posi-tap connectors so I just used a tap from my local auto parts store. It's the kind where you fold it over the source wire and then insert a male spade which was crimped to the new wire. I may redo that later.
