New front tire option for dirt, Conti TKC 80

As was reported in the versys thread on advrider, Conti TKC 60 to be offered in a 120/70/17.

This is great news, although it sure took them long enough. I'm planning a trip on the trans Labrador hiway next summer. One or the other of these tires likely will be on the bike for that trip.

A quick question: the Trail Attacks come in 150/70 in 2 models, a "69V" and a "70V". Does anyone know what the difference is?

As time goes on, it appears the market is slowly but surely getting bigger for the V... Heck if you ebay'd "Versys" early last year you got 3 pages of stuff, now if you do i believe it's somewhere in the high 40's! Very good news indeed!

69V is 17", and the 70V is 18".

I've had a TrailAttack 150/70-17 rear with a Distanzia 120/70-17 front since 2009, and they're pretty good... I plan to go with Pirelli Scorpion Trail next time, as they're available in 160/60 rear and 120/70 front.

The Pirellis are interesting too but I haven't been able to find an on-line source here in Canada, have you?

These look too aggressive. Not sure the Versys's firm suspension is up to the task of suspending the bike in the kind of conditions where tires like this would be helpful.

http://www.bluestreakracing.ca/en/index.html can get them. Contact them for a quote. I don't have the quote anymore, but it was very reasonable. Free shipping in Canada.
They can also get much more than the lower priced Motul products, etc listed on their site, like Maxima air filter oil and cleaner, fork fluid, etc, for less than from Motovan, Kimpex, Parts Canada, etc from your local motorcycle dealer.

Pete's superbike in Montreal usually has great prices.
I've bought tires from Pete's and been happy with the experience, but his website doesn't show Scorpion Trails in the right size for our bike. Have you called him to see if he can get them?

You must have never heard of this stuff we call sand.
All the suspension in the world wont get you through it, but the right tires will.

I'm not a fan of the TKCs myself. They really don't clean very well in the mud. And they are plain terrifying on wet tarmac. On the plus side they do get pretty good mileage.

I prefer a combo of Michelin Karoo in the back and Pirelli MT21 in the front for ADV riding. But I don't know by heart whether you can get them in sizes compatible with the V.

What bike do you run the Karoo/MT21's on?
I assume it has a 21" tube type front to run the MT21.

The tube type and tubeless TKC's seem to be slightly different animals.

The tube type TKC's are not that great, particularly the 21" front and there are better choices for bikes that run those sizes.

I too happen to favor the MT21 and used it on my KTM 640 ADV's.
But I like the tubeless TKC's on bigger bikes for their long life, quiet ride and decent road handling, for me, even in the wet.

I ran them on my 660 Tenere. Karoon in the back because it had a better life than the MT.

I had a chance to try them on a GS, but they failed to convince me. The trails around here can get rather muddy as well on occasion, and the TKC just fills up almost immediately.

Best advice I ever got was to use the TKC's in Alaska on those dirt roads that turn to yogurt when it rains. I would have been a hurting pup without them and as it turned out I still had to pull over every 10 miles or so after heavy rain and scrap the mud from out of the fender and off the radiator. If I had not had the TKC's I would have been looking for a pickup truck to get me the hell out of there. I bet your still going to need to jack up the front fender with these new tires however as the mud gets caked up pretty fast.

They make a distanzia in a 160/60. I have a set mounted right now.

I,ve been a Dual sport rider for many years and never had a bike with tubeless tires.
(Yes..Yes.. I know the Versys is not a "dual sport")
I bought a spare set of wheels and mounted the tkc Tires on them and now my bike looks like a tractor!
I was wondering what to do in case of a flat. Should I carry a spare tube?
Can I fit a tube in a tubeless tire in the event of a flat? My portable compressor will never seat the bead of the tubeless.

A plug kit is fine.
If you get a large gash in your tire or a large shard of glass then you can put a tube in there. You have to take all the levers, etc for this. You probably know this from riding your ktm....

I don't think the bead will seat with a portable compressor. For the bead to seat, the psi has to be kinda high. In my garage I go to 80 psi to seat the bead. I know my slime pump would probably melt or something.... With a tube in the middle, the bead doesn't have to seat, the tube in the middle will get you out of the woods.

I wouldn't take a tube and all that it entails unless I know there are rocks that tear up the sidewalls of tires....for groomed gravel roads you're fine.
