Suspension Upgrades?

So I'm coming from the SV world, and over there suspension mods are almost a requirement for more than relaxed riding.

I was wondering if suspension mods are a common thing for the Versys, does it really need it?

Hello grecojas, I've had my KLE since April and ridden about 6000mi., weigh 2-220lbs.While I am not always very aggressive I have my moments,
I personally feel no need to change anything more than adjustments or fine tuning. I think the suspension is just fine for my purposes.(solo recreation)

Of course you'll need to decide for yourself how lacking the suspension is/or isn't, for your type of riding...You will definitely need to ride one for a while to decide if the added expense will improve it's characteristics enough for you. You'll need to spend the cash before you find out whether it was worth it or not.
Me, I am too cheap and happy with the bike as is.Ron

I ride solo mostly. (36K now). Somehow, I feel the bike handles better 2 up.

For the suspension, I am thinking of going Hyperpro but the stock suspension is good.
You have to tweak it to your riding nirvana. Keep playing around with it before spending some money. (I'm also stingy).

When we talk of suspension, one other thing not mentioned are the tires. Check your tire pressure (normal 32/26, mine 33/36) A bit more at the front for hard braking.

Get a hold of the service manual and start tweaking. Cheers and Welcome!

This question was more or less to see if the V needed a suspension upgrade/mod (as many who owned an SV/SVS/SFV will tell you )

This is going to sound completely crazy, but I'm making a final decision between a Suzuki Gladius and the Versys (so far, the V is winning hands down ) I just want to make sure I'm making the best decision (I know, I know-only I can choose what's right and blah blah; but a majority is a majority)

If you haven't, try test ride a friend's V or Gladius.
I not telling you lip service which way you should decide.
Only you can decide what suits you.

For majority of us, The V is a great bike to ride.

JDRocks has done major work on his ER6N probably about the same as Versys suspension and did not change the suspension according to his first post here...http://www.kawasakiversys.com/forums...ead.php?t=5480...a very small fraction of folks here have done suspension mods. compared to what it sounds like many riders on the other forum have found a most necessary mod. with their rides. Just trying to help convince you the Versys would be your best all-around choice.

A suspension upgrade is not needed. However, it is beneficial. How beneficial it is depends on how you ride and how demanding/perceptive/picky you are. It has the potential, depending on you, to be very significant.

Maybe somebody who knows where the link is will chime in but there is a guy in the UK who just destroys other racers on much faster bikes with a stock suspended (and braked) Versys. He claims to only have put sticky tires on. Granted, he's a highly skilled expert rider but the video shows it's us, not the bike. Gladius? No, seriously.

Unlike most of the "Budget Bikes" the suspension on the Vs can be pretty good using the stock components. Keeping in mind that most of us aren't using this for a track bike (133bhp excepted!)
The Factory settings per the manual seem off. Most guys under 250#'s will dial most of the pre-load out of the shock; that's OK though, gives you somewhere to go when you add a passenger and or bags. It's a cartridge fork, though sort of a basic one, with rebound as the only damping setting . It's kinda harsh but a fluid change can make a big difference. Check out Gustavo's posts.

Those other guys are pretty slow, no way will a versys keep with a racer unless he's in the CB500 cup.
I'd like to take this bloke on with my fairly stock Versys, I think it would be pretty close, but if I was to use a sports bike I'd leave all of those in the video and him for dead he was only running around 1min 55's a lap. I've done 2minutes in the hail with over an inch of water on the track. I think somewhere between 1min 35 and 1.40 is my best time in the dry. I finished midfield in my race.
I dare say if you gave him a proper bike he would make me look silly though.

If he's reading this I'll take on all comers in our own BVTD cup. British Versys Trackday Cup.

Moto GP swingarm, ZX10R led rear light, ZX10R wavey discs. Moto GP mass centralised exhaust, USD forks.

My rear shock was gone at 18000 kms...pretty disappointing that it went so early. My new nitron highlights how crap the oem shock had become. Am quite happy with the forks though and don't feel the need to fool with the front end.

I did the Hyperpro lowering spring (rear) and dropped the fork in the front and I am done. The progressive spring made the bike smoother and more stable. Worlds above the 01 SV650 I had. Ive owned 4 bikes and this is the best stock I have ever had. The Gladius has a gear indicator which is way cool but the fit is so different I think you will immediately like one over the other. My Versys is better than my SV650 ever was but apparently the SV650 is a great track bike. I only ride street myself.

Front springs are required for anyone over 200lbs or 90kgs,the bike dives under any sort of mid to heavy braking, around the twisties the front wallows abit when transistioning from side to side or on uneven ground and thats not much above moderate speeds. Springs are cheap and apart from good tires suspension in the most important aspect of keeping you upright went you really need it. I weigh 93kgs i need to go up 2 springs sizes from standard, some may say the front springs are fine and if you are 180/78 kgs it maybe. Correctly weighted springs actually improves the plushness of the ride because you dont dive straight through the stroke as quick, have more travel in reserve and not in the harsher/ more progressive part of the stroke.
The rear spring is fine for my weight and is set on the third lowest preload setting for correct static and rider sag, the valving is very average tho, but the front is the first problem to be looked at if you are happy with the tires IMO.
