Warm engine before oil change?

Since my old bike had a thermostatically controlled oil cooler it made since to warm it up to open the thermostat. The versys, oth, is water-cooled. So is it just to flow the oil easier?

Oil flows better . . .

when warm. I run mine about 15 minutes, or a couple times around the neighborhood.

Cheers!

I always run any motor before an oil change. It lowers the viscosity of the oil and allows it to flow easier as well as helps get any foreign bodies into suspension and they have a better chance of coming out with the oil. I usually buy an extra quart of oil and flush the first quart just in case. it's a couple extra bucks, but worth the piece of mind IMO.

I ALWAYS change oil and filter after returning from a ride where the bike is fully warmed-up. I put rubber gloves on, and have a magnet against the drain-plug for the LAST few turns so it DOESN'T fall into the hot oil.

I always dump the oil at the end of a long ride. I let it drain while I eat a meal, then finish the job.
