Oil light

Just wondering if it is normal that the oil light stays on until you start up the bike, which is when it turns off?

The oil light is activated by pressure. Until the bike is started there is no oil pressure. If the light comes on while you are riding THEN you have something to worry about. That can be caused by not enough oil in the sump or an oil pump failure.

Just make sure you check the oil sight glass before starting every once in a while, make sure you stand the bike upright.

Hi Kiwi, thats the thing, I cant really tell by looking at it, since it's see through. It must be totally full beacause I can't see the top of the oil, hence I wasn't sure whether it was totally empty!lol

The low oil pressure light is lit before starting engine, also to confirm that it's working and that the red LED light is not burnt out.
With the bike balanced on a level surface and engine stopped and settled for several minutes, the oil level should be close to the upper line without surpassing it. If oil level is too high, let enough of it drain out to correct it... How far do you have to lean it to the left for the level to appear?

Now I know why I couldnt see any oil, there was none in the pane to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Worryingly the light hadn't come on either, and I have been riding her like that thinking the oil was so full I couldnt see!

Have put in some synthetic 10w40 4t oil, and it has come up half way, and that was with 3/4 of a litre!

Panic over, I didnt have the bike up straight when checking, effectively overfilling it. Just drained it again and now its up tp the max line when stood up straight.
I did however drive it for 10 mins with too much oil in there, I hope it hasnt caused any problems?

It probably didn't hurt anything. Too much adds internal friction by being splashed all over the place. In severe cases it can bend the crank shaft.

Bend the Crankshaft!yowzers, is that something that would happen over time, and not in the space of say, 10 minutes??

Just been on a 250km bike ride and didn't seem to have any problems!

If you revved it hard it could happen in 1/2 second...but you would know the instance it did it. No more engine. You would be walking.

Do you know how much oil you had to remove to bring it back down to the full line? Was it more or less than the 3/4 quart you had just added? You probably didn't ride it very hard and at high rpm in that 10 minute ride... In 2008, my new 2007 Versys was delivered from a dealer near Montreal Quebec with about 3/4 quart too much oil in it. I removed the excess before my first ride and the break-in.

As noted in repair manual:
○Situate the motorcycle so that it is perpendicular to the
ground.
○If the motorcycle has just been used, wait several minutes
for all the oil to drain down.
○If the oil has just been changed, start the engine and
run it for several minutes at idle speed. This fills the oil
filter with oil. Stop the engine, then wait several minutes
until the oil settles.

Yep, it was a lot too much, but only rode 10 mins then drained it back out. Went on a long ride after that with no problems so fingers crossed I didnt do any damage.
