I just need some advice on what other people are running on their V.
after the OEM tires, I've used Metzeler Z8 (3 rear, 2 front) and Pirelli Angel GTs (1 rear 1 front) on the Versys. A new Angel GT rear gets installed next week.
The Z8s were very good. The Angel GT is better.
It's been something like 14k mostly freeway commuting miles on current Angel GT rear, and other than being squared off, it works as well as new. I could get more mileage out of it, but I don't know how much, and I'd rather replace it now than have it wear through the tread at an inconvenient time.
That's the most I've gotten from any rear tire on any bike. And I enjoyed riding it the whole time. It always seemed to grip well under power. It never got any funny wear patterns where the different compounds meet.
I bought more of the same, because it's the best tire I've had for my application (year-round riding, mostly commuting and similar, some fun rides).
Better than a Pilot Road 3 or 4? Some seem to think so, and others don't. You could buy one model now, a different model later and and see what you think.
OTOH if you go with PR2, be careful you don't get old tires.
It seems to me it's hard to go wrong with modern radials from reputable manufacturers in non-OEM models. Yeah Dunlop makes awesome rubber too--just not the OEM Versys tire.
Another tire I've considered is the Avon Storm 3D XM, which has a thicker tread in the rear for longer life, and it looks like it's on sale at Revzilla.
