Scratching noise 3rd and up

Hey Guys,

Lately I've been hearing a scratching noise or metallic rubbing of some sort coming from the engine area. Like taking sandpaper and rubbing circles on metal.

I've ruled out its not chain, brakes, suspension, or steering.

It will only make the noise 3rd gear and up, at speed ~4k and up rpm.
If i'm doing 70mph on the freeway, I hear the noise, pull the clutch in to coast, no noise.
Can't reproduce it on the rear stand.

So far, I've replaced the clutch lever, clutch cable, clutch springs, and clutch plates. Basket bearings looked great.
No metal bits in the oil.
Performed valve clearance adjustment, no problem there.

Anyone experience the same? The bike is running great, plenty of power and great MPG's.

Thanks for the assistance!

*edit, Currently at 16k Miles, I DD 50 miles a day.

Was it like that before replacing clutch plates and springs? Is/was your clutch slipping? is the noise on the right or left side of transmission? What mileage are you at and which model year is it? How are your chain and sprockets?

Hey Invader, the noise has stayed the same before and afer the new parts, clutch was fine but I thought it might have been worn. Im pretty sure its comming from the clutch side, Its only noticeable at speed. currently at 16k and its a 09.
chain and sprockets have about 1k on them.
Thanks for the assistance.

Hi Iconia; I'm experiencing the exact same noise under the exact same circumstances. Did you ever find the issue and the remedy?
thanks

How much mileage on your original chain and sprockets? Does chain tension vary much as you rotate rear wheel?

Never found the issue, I just put a set of earplugs in now, if the problem is there it will work itself out eventually. /shrug

That's the spirit! I cured the "check engine" light on my old beater car with a piece of black electrical tape.

same here... it does not seem to affect performance, just the noise is disturbing...

When I was troubleshooting, I would have all the front and lower fairings, shrouds crashbars off.
Its an interesting noise, but I have not noticed any metal or out of place parts the four times I've drained the oil and replaced the side cover gasket($20 a pop).
So if the problem is still there, i'll just wait for it to show up.
