Black crud in rad filler
While changing the coolant I noticed some black crud around the rad filler spout when I removed the rad cap. It seemed to be seated around the bottom of the well that the cap is seated in but I didn't see any in the rad, nor did I see any in the coolant when drained. I assume that it was paint over spray from when the rad frame was painted at new. That tells me the coolant has never been changed. It's an '07 I bought used, from a mechanic!
I cleaned the cap and spout up and added new coolant. Ran as per manual "until the fan comes on" Well, the fan never came on and I have never heard the fan run. The coolant temperature warning light has never come on either, even on hot summer days, so I'm not too concerned about it. I had to add a very small amount of coolant to the overflow container after a good heat cycle.
Looking at the archives here, I have seen quite a number of posts about the fan never coming on. My rad is very clean and the fan spins freely, plus it is quite cool today, about +8C. On my old Connie I could cross two posts coming out of the temp sensor to make the fan come on (to test it), but the V has a different set up, plus the Connie fan came on quite frequently and would run for a few minutes after turning the ignition off on very hot days.
Anybody here find that black crud around the rad filler hole?
