anyone trying the Pilot Road 4 GT??

hi there,

just wanted to know if someone out there is planning to get a PR4 GT for its versys...GT was made for heavier bikes and I was advised to go for GT given my weight, my wife and my top and side cases fully loaded....the only concern with GT is that they don't have 160/60 for rear....but they do have 170/60.....any advise please?

Tires vary greatly from brand to brand even in the same size. The 170/60 will be 10mm wider, less than 1/2" or 1/4" on each side and 6mm taller, about 1/4". I don't think you will even notice a difference over stock size.

Just took a look at the PR4s in the garage, front 236 rear 325 kg, 561 kg, 1,234 lbs or so max load. Kawasaki claims 454 lbs for the bike which seems fairly accurate. Do you, your wife and baggage really weigh more than 780 lbs?

a plain calculation of the total weight of both of us with gears and the top case and side cases fully loaded gives 562 lbs...I always like to have larger margins so I was very receptive to the advise on going for a GT...it is cheaper for me to order them from france....

You would be ok either way but too factors come to mind.

a)GT= More rubber is stiffer ride, but will hold more weight.

b)GT= More rubber is less MPG. More energy to push the tire around.

On my bicycle I can tell the difference between a thicker tube and the thinner one. But if you never knew the difference you couldn't compare the two!

good point on the MPG which is very important in a country where 1 L costs 2.3 USD....if you think based on your experience that PR4 can carry the weight stated above then all the reasons go for a PR4 against PR4 GT....

My guess is that the weight rating on the tire is conservative. I would go with the stock size. A taller tire will make your gearing taller which you don't need.

I'll probably try the PR4's when I have 22,500 service done in a few weeks. Convenient to have it done at the same time. Currently have PR3's and they've been fabulous, although the back tire is pretty worn along the centerline. PR4's have harder rubber there than the PR3s.

Someday is not a day of the week.
