Name that doohickey

I'm designing crash bars for my V so I've been poking around the bike looking for attachment points and I came across this weird looking protrusion above the radiator.

It's a small, almost triangular piece of flat steel welded to the frame. It has no apparent surfaces or holes to attach anything. There is a similar, but differently shaped piece on the steering column.

It's no good to attach crash bars, but I'm curious now. Anybody have a clue?

I wonder if the lower triangular one is used to help secure the Ninja 650R's fairing... The tab on the frame's steering head is your steering stop.
