16T Sprocket Wheelie - What's up with that!?!
On the daily 20 mile commute to work today on my 2008 Versys. I easily pulled a wheelie with no clutch with the 15T sprocket before I made the switch to the 16Tooth front sprocket. I was in first gear , a slight uphill grade from a stop sign. Gave it the gas and up she went. I was expecting it - no problem.
Today on the commute, I was first in line at a stop light. The light turned green, I noticed that the road I was crossing had a nice crown to it in the middle, I timed it perfectly, as the front wheel was at the apex of the road crown I gave her full throttle. Since I didn't touch the clutch, I expected a small rise from the front wheel since I have the larger sprocket. To my surprise, the front wheel left the pavement and was headed up with no end in sight. What I expected to be a small up and then away we go was a full-fleged 10 inch wheelie in the blink of an eye! WHATS UP WITH THAT?
I am sure I looked like this
so I let the gas go and banged to the ground. The people stopped at the light had a good rookie wheelie show - glad there were no local enforcement officers waiting at the light. Lesson Learned. The versys has the power to pull the wheel up even with the 16T.
Next time - I know what I am in for!
