need help diagnosing dead battery(?)

I'll say first of all, I'm NOT familiar with electronics besides the very basics....
I have a 2009 Versys. It has the original battery. The only add-on I've done is basic "wrap around" heated grips that go into a fuse box....Did that years ago and have had no problems whatsoever...They are tapped into the tail light and have never given me any issues. My problem is, for the past couple weeks, the bike starts fine in the morning, I ride it to work(20 miles), and then when I go to start it in the afternoon to go home, it cranks but doesn't start. I just took the battery out of the bike after it failed to start the bike after not being ridden for 2 days, and the voltage reads 12.03. Dead battery? I have another one on order already, but I'm worried that it's NOT the battery and might be something else.....Once this old batter is charged and back in the bike, how can I find out where the actual problem is? Thanks.

I think you've found your problem. Batteries start to go after four or five seasons. I would wait and see if all is well after you get your new battery. Think positive.

It does crank but does not start the second time in afternoon... Is your normal warmed up idle set to 1300 rpm? What's your mileage, and how old are your spark plugs?

Well, the battery show 12.54 after charging. I put it in the bike and tried to start it up. All lights and dash come on. When I push the starter button, it tries to turn over, but makes a "hiccup" sound......Hmmm......

mileage is about 18,000 miles, spark plugs are originals. I'll try and post a video.

What's the output from your alternator. Maybe battery.

You are well overdue for new spark plugs.

Is your normal warmed up idle set to 1300 RPM ??

You have to be aware of what you're idling at. If it's not at 1300 rpm idle, you must set it to 1300 with your adjustment knob on the right. And I mean your normal idle once it's warmed up and settled.

But if I can't even START it, it's kind of hard to set the idling speed, no? Did you watch/listen to the video I posted?
Strange sound.

You're missing the fuel tank... Does it start with the fuel tank on, connected and hooked up? If not, try cranking while opening the throttle just a tad. Then check idle speed if it does start, and once it's warmed up.

Replace your spark plugs while the fuel tank is off. Beside a likely idle adjustment required, new spark plugs will definitely improve your situation. Also clean and re-oil your air filter... Do you know how to do it properly?

This would be a great time to check and adjust valve clearances if you haven't already... After all of that, you could synchronize your throttle bodies.
