maybe a new question

or a new way of looking at an old question. or neither.

so i was at the gearing commander website looking at the possible benefit of a 44 tooth sprocket as i do mainly freeway commuting. then i tried inputting a 150/70 17 tire with stock gearing and it basically gives me the mpg at the rpm's i'd like. am i crazy in assuming this? does it make the same differences as switching sprocket size?

What you saved in fuel, you would spend in tire wear.
A 70% wears too fast in center, in my experience.
I'm back on /60 now, and if I was not so difficult in tire choices, perhaps Id' go a /55 or /50 even, to spread the wear on larger patch.

Whatever minute rpm decrease you felt from tire diameter, it won't last anyway with faster center wear..

Front sprocket and rear together might make a difference. Math don't lie.
But 2 teeth out of 46 (~4%) is a lousy 200-300rpm decrease. That barely changes the sound...
But 2 out of 15 of the front, well you do the math.

I've been 'running' a 150/70 x 17 rear on ALL my V650s for years, and I don't believe I've ever noticed the center wearing overly quickly on them. BTW - I do NOT run tires till they're bald!

Here's the mileages I got from various rears, on BIG RED, my '08 including the OEM sized Dunlop RoadSmart = 11,152 miles; as well as on various 150/70 rears: METZLER Tourance = 14,125 miles, 12,337 miles, 14,123 miles; KENDA BIG BLOCK (knobby) = 9,750 miles; SHINKO E705 = 11,987 miles.

Figures from the GREEN HORNET ('09) and the GREEN HORNET TOO ('15) are about 1,700 miles N (in BC).

Me, same guy, same bike, same load, same style, same final wear, same roads/dirt, same pressure:
anakee wild 150/70: 9000km
anakee wild 170/60: 11000km

It makes sense. There is just more rubber in center contact on the 60%+highway I have to do.
If somehow you can lean everywhere you go, your mileage will surely vary.

So it will, if you pick multi compound tires like PR2, which lasted 21000km.

FWIW - I run my tires at 36 psi F, 42 psi R.
