Valve Clearance Schedule

I just noticed the Maintenance Interval Chart shows valve clearance inspection is at 15k miles for US or Canada bikes. All other bikes are at 26k miles.

Anyone know why the difference?

In my OWNER'S MANUAL for my '15 it says 24 (15.2) and above THAT shows that the 24 is kms x 1000, the 15.2 is miles x 1000.

OP's talking about the schedule published in the Service Manual, which shows non-North American bikes on a 42000 km valve clearance schedule, rather than 24000 km. See attached.

Many believe that this is done by Kawasaki during the EPA certification process. This seems to be prevalent among all Kawasaki models. See First Valve Specs Checkup 24K

So, some believe that there are no mechanical differences, and therefore no reason to check the valve clearance until the 42000 km mark, except that Kawasaki has promised the EPA that it will suggest checks every 24000 km. I am not suggesting you not follow the recommended maintenance schedule, and others here will have more experience with the results of valve clearance checks over time.

I was looking at the service manual page you referenced here, which lead to my question.

Regardless of what the service manual says many on this forum, myself included, have experienced tight valves prior to the recommended 15.2k mile initial check. This initial check is the most critical as the valve clearance tends to move the most as the bike breaks in.

My experience with several bikes is that after the initial adjustment the valves usually stay much closer to spec going forward.

As a side note: Pretty sure in the mass production environment of the factory the workers get the valve clearance in spec but perhaps on the tighter end of the range. Certainly not using the TLC we would use on our own personal machine.

I TOO suggest 'doing' your first valve clearance check EARLY, as I found TIGHT valves when I did SEVERAL V650s.

Additionally I suggest that you set your valves AT or close-to the MAXIMUM open values, as they seem to tighten, NOT loosen over time!

After calling a few Kawi service centers, including the stealership where I bought my 650. I could get no straight answer for the discrepancy. So I called a few bike repair shops,more befuddlement. V-stroms are 50,000K if I remember. So I split the diff and went with 36,000K!

wow that is odd. both my caponords never needed an adjustment. i sold the first at 80k miles. it was a rotax though. the second is a factory aprilia motor and has 86k miles. always in spec. the mechanic says it's because of my riding style. i always ride for an hour. sometimes much longer but never shorter. i'll hit 15k in the first 9 months.

Referring to replies #4 and 5 I found two exhaust valves at minimum, one slightly tighter and one slightly looser at 12k miles. They have not moved in two checks since, the last at about 53k miles. So yeah, the first one is critical.

BTW, this bike is ridden and flogged quite hard in the fun stuff. The engine really seems to like playing in the 6-9k rpm range and so does the owner.
