Air filter problems... Advice needed!

Morning.
Picked up my newly serviced V last year. All was well and I was getting around 60mpg on my daily 100 mile round commute. With such a long ride, economy is pretty important and the 200 mile+ range was one of the things that attracted me to the V in the first place. Around 3500 miles later and the economy dropped off by around 10mpg along with a lot more popping and flicking on the overrun.
Gave her a service and changed the air filter and bingo, back up to 60mpg and no popping. 3500 miles later same problem. Looks like the filter will need attention between services. Not the end of the world, but im left with three choices.

1. Replace the current pattern filter with a new one.
2. clean the current pattern filter
3. Buy a good filter. Something like a Pipercross and hope it is more resistant to clogging.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Cheers for you help!

Phil,
Buy another stock filter, and keep it oiled and ready. Then just change out the filter when you need to, and 'prep' the one you just removed. Very little 'down-time' that way.
