Speedometer malfunction

My speedo is mostly showing the right speed but recently I've glanced down to see some fluctuation. I can be going 50 mph and then my speedo will start jumping around to lots of different numbers. Mostly it shows way slower speeds than I'm going. For example I was doing a constant 50 mph and saw my speedo reading 3mph then 25, then 5 all over the place but always slower than what I'm going.

Where is the speedo connected to? Is it possible something is coming loose and showing wacky slow speeds. It just started doing it this weekend.

Any thing I should check?

The sensor is at the countershaft sprocket. Maybe something jammed in there? A lot of crud collects there due to flinging of chain lube.

Maybe a good spray of WD-40 or some degreaser will remove the crud on this sensor.

my speedo and tach ran erratically at certain revs.

it was caused by a loose wire at the back of the fuse box.

Run the engine and wiggle those wires
