Voltmeter

Inquired about this waterproof voltmeter but the shipping to Malaysia is a killer (USD 35). Same shipping price up to 35 units.

Anyway, order this from the UK. Simple and cheaper.

I was supposed to buy one a long time ago (and never did) when my stator problems hit the fan. Thanks for the link to the UK, even with the US/GBP conversion, incl. shipping, I am paying less than the cheapest alternative stateside.

I picked one of these up and have installed it on my car until I get my bike. 26% battery life 14.0V battery voltage when running, 12.6V when sitting.

Hoping to become a rider soon

What about this one, it is a voltmeter, clock, and thermometer in one unit, best thing is the price: http://www.amazon.com/Show-Chrome-Digital-Funtion-Meter/dp/B000I5GMPY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1333070237&sr=8-9

Slow down, and you'll get there faster!!!

I have the same one, what I like is it is simple and very accurate, waterproof, works in the bright sunshine and the dark, and you can have poor vision and still know everything is good, green is good! And it can be mounted any place, just a small hole, comes with a waterproof legend plate.

For you characters who are using voltmeters that give an actual voltage reading, what are you seeing while going down the road?

"I am a retired electrical engineer and am totally disappointed with this product for the following reasons. 1. It's advertised as a cycle product, but is clearly a car product. The unit has a number of holes in it and does not appear to be weather proof, except the outside temp probe which is indicated to be weather proof (an indication of a car product). With a cycle there is no inside and outside temp, it's all outside. The instructions mention using the included velcro to attach it to the dash (as in a car!). 2. It's advertised as having an internal back light but mine did not work. 3. The voltmeter was inaccurate, I compared it to two digital volt meters and it read about 0.5 volts low. The main reason I bought it was for the volt meter."

I really don't want to try and see if the voltage is 13 volts 13.5 volts or 14.2 volts, I only want to know that the alternator is keeping up with the loads. As to the battery bug, might be something handy, but IMO if you have been riding a V for any time you get to know what it sounds like after sitting for a week or several weeks, if it turns over and starts similar to new that's all I care. However, I have had it happen in my van and on my dirt bike, one the regulator packed it in while towing a trailer on a Sunday going camping, and the bike quit on me 15 miles from home, nice to know the alternator isn't keeping the battery charged. If your bike barely cranks over, it is at this time to figure out what is wrong, not 20 miles from home, and generally (if you don't have added equipment that isn't switched) that is a indication that your battery has lost capacity or you have a regulator problem.

I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and the surroundings while riding, the heads up monitor gives me a very simple solid green when everything is good, when idling at a stop light, and the fan comes on, it goes amber first and then steady red . I have checked the voltage with a Fluke digital meter, the settings of the tri-colour led are very accurate.
